Session Notes - October 30, 2011 Session

This session marked the twelfth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2011-2012 season!

With a couple of players out of town this week, there were no games played in the B division.

The tournament rules divisions were joined by 4 players who played 30 games in which we scored 11,639 points for a 387.9667 point-per-game average. Of the 46 recorded bingos we played, 1 was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Naurlene Canterman claims top honors this week in division A with a 7-1 +646 pt performance.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This week's regular contests were from the mind of Ed Saunders. Thanks, Ed!!
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

There were 4 players in division A and no players in division B.

The first was The "NL" Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that contains the letters "N" and "L", in any order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders' DELEING scored 36 pts, Richard Spence tried REPELLING for 67, but Lewis Saul cooked up a 74 pt SIRLOIN to chow down on the $3.00 prize.

The second was the Sounds Like A Homonym Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is a homonym of one or more other words. Ed Saunders KNEW (NEW-NOO) that 36 pts wouldn't win, Naurlene Canterman built her hopes on 71 pts for STORIED (STOREYED), but Richard Spence tailored his 74 pt play of TAILORS (TAILERS) to follow the winning path to the $3.00 prize.

The nines were flying off the rack this week as three of them landed on the board. Richard Spence authored two of them to claim $4.36 of the $6.54 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot. Somehow, Richard managed to turn a rack of ?GLLNPR (0 sevens, 1 eight, and 5 nines possible with that challenging rack) into REPELLING for 67 pts. Later, Richard managed to pull FACTIONAL from a rack of ?AFIOLT (3 sevens, 15 eights, and 41 nines possible) for 63. Ed Saunders blistered the board for 92 pts from a rack of ?ACEISV (7 sevens, 20 eights and 60 nines) as he applied VESICANTS in claiming the remaining $2.18 from the jackpot.

The other Progressive Jackpots went unclaimed this week and $0.75 will be added to each next session. We have paid out $140.42 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2011-2012 season.

Next session's contests are from the cluttered mind of Ed Saunders. Thanks, Ed!
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next regular session (November 6, 2011) shall feature the following contests:
The "PU", I Smell A Contest - A quarter of dues collected in each division shall be awarded to the player in that division who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that contains the letters "P" and "U", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. PRIEDIEU, UPLEAPED, PULQUES, EPAULET, TUPELOS, PARVENU, EUROPIUM, HUIPILS, GAZUMPING, PERILUNE, etc.).
Compound It Contest - A quarter of dues collected in each division shall be awarded to the player in that division who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that is a true compound word rather than a word that has a prefix or suffix that also happens to be a word (e.g. DAYTIME, PIGSKIN, DOVETAIL, BOWFINS, TITMOUSE, SEAROBIN, PINHEAD, GOLDFISH, CATWALK, ARMCHAIR, DOGHOUSE, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.18 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $5.23 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $6.54 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
