Session Notes - April 22, 2012 Session

This session marked the thirty-fourth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2011-2012 season!

We welcomed Jacob Williams to this week's session. Jacob is in town visiting relatives and managed to find a few free hours on Sunday to play some Scrabble with us. He'll be headed back home to Austin, Texas sometime later in the week. Jacob's always welcome at the Tucson clubs when he's in town.

The tournament rules divisions were joined by 5 players who played 32 games in which we scored 13,023 points for a 406.9688 point-per-game average. Of the 56 recorded bingos we played, five were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Travis Carlson climbed back on top of the A division this week, going 6-3 with a positive 494pt spread, 18 bingos, and a 442.44 ppg avg.

There were no players in Division B this week.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This week's regular contests were from the club archives.
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

There were 5 players in division A and no players in division B.

The first was the Starts Or Ends In "N" Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that starts or ends with the letter "N". In Division A, Ed Saunders scored 39 with ZIN, Travis Carlson took it up to 65 with NATRONS, Lewis Saul waited in the weeds with 70 pts for NETTLES, but Richard Spence solved the money-making problem with his 74 pt EQUATION to claim the $3.75 prize.

The second was the Colorful Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a recognizable color, dye, or pigment of some sort. In Division A, Travis Carlson took 32 pts worth of blood from LAKY (the color of blood), Ed Saunders chalked up 74 pts with RESLATE, Richard Spence took 76 pts from COLOURED, but Lewis Saul stained his entry "dollar-bill" green with 79 pts for STAINED to grab up the $3.75 payoff.

Jacob Williams and Ed Saunders split the $1.86 in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot. Jacob grabbed his $0.93 share with the 99 pt nonbingo SPORTING played through the "OR" combo. Ed wrapped his rack of ?EIILST (15 sevens and 63 eights available with that rack) around an "R" in the third position to rack up 122 pts for GIRLIEST to lay claim to the remaining $0.93.

Richard Spence took the balance in the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot to zero with his 101 pt phony zeroers*. Richard added another $0.93 to his take with the play.

Ed Saunders faced a blocked-up board with his rack of AEEIRST (2 sevens, 29 eights, and 117 nines available with that rack). Ed had been looking to play LEARIEST from an open "L" before his opponent played through that bingo line, leaving a "T" in the 7th position along that line. Down went LATERITES for 63 pts and the $2.79 payout from the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot.

The other Progressive Jackpot went unclaimed this week and $0.93 will be added to it next session. We have paid out $397.17 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2011-2012 season.

Next session's contests are from the club archives.
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next regular session (April 29, 2011) shall feature the following contests:

The Bird Is The Word Contest - In honor of John James Audubon's birthday on April 26th, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that is the name of some sort of bird (e.g. WHYDAHS, HOACTZIN, CARACARA, OILBIRD, WHIMBREL, ANI, DOTTEREL, DUNLINS, CURLEWS, NUTHATCH, APTERYX, etc.)
