Session Notes - April 1, 2012 Session

This session marked the thirty-first week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2011-2012 season!

We welcomed Vikram Rentala to the club for the first time. Vikram is in town working at the University and will be headed off to Michigan later in the summer. He has found his way to both of the Tucson tournament clubs and we hope to see him often while he's in town. We've thoroughly enjoyed his company and his strong play.

The tournament rules divisions were joined by 5 players who played 22 games in which we scored 9,092 points for a 413.2727 point-per-game average. Of the 42 recorded bingos we played, three were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence claimed top honors in the A division, going 4-2 with a positive 389 pt spread, 16 bingos, and a 463.5 ppg avg.

Vikram Rentala took the top spot in the B division with a 2-1 -14 performance.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This week's regular contests were from the club archives.
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

There were 3 players in division A and 2 players (one paid) in division B.

The first was the Starts Or Ends In "K" Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that starts or ends with the letter "K". In Division A, Ed Saunders scored 30 with KIF but Richard Spence went after bigger game and scored some 86 pt KEITLOAS to bag the $2.25 prize. There were no entries in Division B last week and $0.75 rolled over to this session's first contest making it a $1.50 prize. Carmelene Siani managed 18 pts for KITER but Vikram Rentala gave it a 22 pt WINK and wins the money.

The second was the Planet Of The Plants Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a member of the plant kingdom. In Division A, Richard Spence tied down 72 pts with GIRDLING (LING is another name for heather) but Ed Saunders spiced it up to 76 pts with MINTIER and grabbed the $2.25 payoff. There were no entries in Division B again this week and $1.50 rolls over to the second contest next session.

Ed Saunders and Travis Carlson split the $0.75 in this week's 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot. Travis earned a $0.37 share with 103 pts for PREVISED and Ed claimed the lion's share ($0.38) with his 135 pt play of SQUIRED.

Richard Spence knocked off the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot for the second consecutive week. Richard took the interesting rack of ?IMNRSU (5 sevens, 21 eights, and 58 nines possible with that rack) and located an "AE" combo on the board. The result was a 64 pt play of MURAENIDS to claim the $0.75 prize.

The other Progressive Jackpots went unclaimed this week and $0.75 will be added to each next session. We have paid out $363.49 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2011-2012 season.

Next session's contests are from the club archives.
