Session Notes - August 30, 2009 Session

This session marked the fifth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips and newtons this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 3 players who played 20 games in which we scored 7,487 points for a 374.35 point-per-game average. Of the 24 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took the honors this week with a 7-1 record +626 pts and the session high game of 535.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "LN" Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "L" and "N", in any order, somewhere within it. Richard Spence scored 81 pts with an unusual combination of skipping school and symbols of Heavenly intervention, hooking his bingo TRUANTS to the end of ANGEL to form TRUANTS/ANGELS. Ed Saunders was sweating blood but his 86 pt play of BLEEDING held up to take the $2.25 prize.

The second was the I Talk To The Trees Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a tree, bush, or shrub of some kind. Karen Lundeen scored 30 pts with the ubiquitous QAT, but Ed Saunders' 68 pt play of JARGONEL (a variety of pear) bore fruit in the form of a $2.25 prize.

Ed's $4.50 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $0.56 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $48.63 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (September 6, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
"OMG" Contest - A Salute to Texting- A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "O", "M", and "G", in any order, somewhere within it (e.g. GNOMIST, GAMBADO, HOGMANAY, BROUGHAM, MOGGING, GLIOMAS, GAMMONS, ORGASMIC, MONGEESE, GOOMBAH, etc.)
Gotta Find A Job Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a profession, occupation, or job of some kind (e.g. SALESMAN, SOLDIER, CLERICAL, ACTRESS, JOINERY, RESEARCH, ANALYST, DRUGGIST, HOUSEBOY, BUTLING, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $41.82 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
