Session Notes - November 29, 2009 Session

This session marked the seventeenth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed Eastside and Speedway Club player Travis Carlson and William Barfuss, a New Mexico resident who is finishing up his stay in Tucson, to club this week. We enjoyed their company and competition and hope to see both of them again in the future.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers, and some salsa and cheese this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 34 games in which we scored 12,833 points for a 377.44 point-per-game average. Of the 39 recorded bingos we played, five were phonies that went unchallenged.

Travis Carlson took top honors this week with a 5-1 +377 pt record. Travis also scratched an itch that he had on his "phoney bone" by trotting out FOUR phoneys ( dawners*, deckages*, movados*, and zincier*) amongst his ten bingos.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "XYZ" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the letters "X", "Y", and "Z", in any order, somewhere within it. Carol Knouse showed BIZ for 42, Sarah Jacobson went royal with REX for 44, Janis Clem cheesed it up with ZA for 46, Ed Saunders made his mark with EX for 52, William Barfuss tried to cut through the competition with an AX for 52, Bob Knouse went Greek with XIS for 68 pts, but Travis Carlson faked everybody out with zincier* for 99 pts and the $5.25 prize.

The second was the Oooh! I Ate Too Much - - - - !!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a food or type of food. Ed Saunders scored 28 pts with his BIALY, William Barfuss (31 pts) jumped on Janis Clem's (46 pts) ZA bandwagon, Carol Knouse ate a 33 pt KIWI, Sarah Jacobson hooked her SQUIRT play to Ed's BIALY to form BIALYS/SQUIRT for 61 pts, Bob Knouse thought the whole contest was FISHy (68 pts), but Travis Carlson scored 69 with SEEDier to grab a second helping of prize money ($5.25) in this session.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.31 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $141.38 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (December 6, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• Catch A "CAB" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C", "A", and "B", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. CABEZON, ABSCISED, SETBACK, AEROBICS, CAPABLE, BECAUSE, CHAMBER, etc.)
• Oooh! I Drank Too Much - - - -!!! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a beverage or type of beverage. (e.g. BURGUNDY, WATERZOOI, WINESAP, KOUMISS, CONGOUS, LIMEADE, USQUABAE, ABSINTHE, CALVADOS, TEABOARD, MILKWEED, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $51.35 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $2.62 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $10.09 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
