Session Notes - March 28, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-third week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured Lewis Saul's incredible cream puffs this week. Lewis provided a large plate of his pastries to the delight and gratification of his Scrabble cohorts. The cream puffs are all gone while the usual selection of chips, crackers, and some chocolate remains pretty much intact.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 50 games in which we scored 18,554 points for a 371.08 point-per-game average. Of the 49 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence took top honors this week with a 7-2 record, 17 bingos and a 446.67 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Happy, Happy Birthday!!!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that starts with either of the letters "R" and "S" in honor of Richard Spence's 16th birthday on March 31st. Lewis Saul and Janis Clem scored 73 pts each with SCOLDER and RESIDES respectively, Sarah Jacobson turned up the heat a little with her 81 pt STEAMER, Ed Saunders took a spin with REVOLVES for 86 pts, but Richard Spence connected with his own contest and took home the $3.75 prize with a 122 pt triple-triple of RELINKED.

The second was the Double-Double Your Pleasure Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that covers two double word score squares with one play. Ed Saunders got 48 points for his DUMBEST play, but Richard Spence Double-Doubled his winnings for the night with a 78 pt DONATION.

Richard Spence's Triple-Triple RELINKED performed double duty for him, winning both the Happy Birthday Contest and the $1.86 that sat in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot. Richard played his 122 pt 3x3 through the "N" and amassed $9.36 in winnings for the night.

Ed Saunders hit the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot yet again, scoring 115 pts with EXTORTS to pocket the $0.93 prize.

Neither of the other Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $0.93 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $371.92 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

This week's (April 4th) contests were submitted by Travis Carlson. If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know. We'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (April 4, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Captain Hook Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play containing at least three "hooks" (creates at least three new words in addition to the main word).
A Contest. . .And All That Jazz - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a musical instrument, genre, or performer. (e.g. VIRTUOSO, MANDOLIN, ZITHERS, BAROQUE, BELLies, FIDDLER, SAXonies, COUNTRY, VIOLence, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $0.93 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
