Session Notes - October 25, 2009 Session

This session marked the twelfth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed wayward Scrabble player Janis Clem back to the fold this week. Janis has been on a 10,000 plus mile odyssey this summer with major stops in Montana and Minnesota. We're happy to have her back.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, and some salsa this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 24 games in which we scored 8,990 points for a 374.5833 point-per-game average. Of the 27 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors this week with a 6-1 +411 record. Richard Spence somehow managed a 452 pt positive spread with an even 3-3 record.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "GO" For It Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "GO", in that order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders and Richard Spence both took the contest rules seriously, playing GO for 14 and 17 pts respectively. Bob and Carol Knouse both decided to add another letter to that, Bob playing GOX and Carol playing GOT (both for 27 pts). Bob and Carol split the $3.75 pie.

The second was the Three's The Charm Contest for the highest scoring play of a three-letter word. Bob and Carol Knouse recycled their words GOX and GOT from the first contest for 27 pts each, Janis Clem made a foray into the land of the contests with ERA for 29 pts, Ed Saunders took a dip with JUS for 36, but Richard Spence put a POX on the competition (53 pts) to grab the $3.75 prize.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $0.93 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $87.06 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (November 1, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
Scary, Scary Night!! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains, or contains a word that pertains within it, to Halloween is some direct manner. If your word is "IFFY", write a sentence tying it in directly to Halloween. (e.g. GHOSTLY, GHOULISH, BELFRIES, SPIDERS, dingBATS, tWITCHES, COSTUME, ZOMBIES, etc.)
Electricity Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains either or both of the letter couplets "AC" and "DC", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. COMRADE, DOCTORAL, GUAIACUM, CADMIUM, DICTIER, ACRIDINE, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $46.30 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
