Session Notes - April 25, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-seventh week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed a face from the past to club this week. Bob Yarmchuk was a regular at the Airport Club in 2004-2005. He shows some rust but we were glad to have him and hope he makes his way back to club often.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, newtons, and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 58 games in which we scored 21,925 points for a 378.0172 point-per-game average. Of the 72 recorded bingos we played, 4 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors with a 4.5-1.5 record, 15 bingos and a 459.5 pt per game average. Ed also reeled off back-to-back 581 and 561 pt games.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was A Developing Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of an immature life form. Sarah Jacobson scored 32 pts with ZOA (pl of ZOON the whole product of one fertilized egg), Richard Spence tried treaSON for 64 pts, but Travis Carlson was awarded the $5.25 prize for his 91 pt play of aWARDed.

The second was The name Of The Game Is ??? Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a recognizable game. Bob Yarmchuk scored 12 pts with LOTTO (but if you play LOTTO, you only have a one in eighty million chance of winning), Richard Spence made 17 with his KINO play, Janis Clem went video with 25 pts for PONGS, but Ed Saunders played the right cards and walked off whistling with the $5.25 prize after his 88 pt play of WHISTLER.

Most of the Progressive Jackpots bit the dust this week. Richard Spence and Ed Saunders scored triple-triples, Richard threading his AEEIN?? rack around an "L" for rELIANcE, 113 pts and $1.86 of the available $3.73 Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot. Ed, meanwhile, fit his AEGILNS rack around an open "H" for LEASHING, 167 pts and the remaining $1.87 from the jackpot.

Lewis Saul racked up 108 pts and the $1.31 prize for the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot with his showy play of DEUTZIAS.

Last, but not least, Ed Saunders rode his 167 pt 3x3 LEASHING, along with 74 pt bingos of SORTIES and OUTREACH, to a big 581 pt game and the $4.66 prize for the Historic Club # 565 Progressive Jackpot.

The other Progressive Jackpot was not claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to it next session. We have paid out $414.04 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The Contests for next week's (May 2nd) session were submitted by Travis Carlson. Thanks Travis !!!
If you have a contest idea or a favorite contest from the past, let me know and we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (May 2, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Foul Vowel Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a "vowel dump" word that consists of more than 70% vowels and at least 3 letters total. (e.g. EAU, OUZO, AECIA, OOGONIA, OIDIOID, AUDITEE, SEQUOIA, ABOITEAU, EPOPOEIA, EULOGIAE, etc.).
Sticks And Stones Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of something physically or emotionally hurtful. (e.g. BREAKUP, BATTERER, CLUBman, INSULTS, SCIMITAR, IGNOMINY, SUNBURN, LAMBASTE, VEXilla, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
