Session Notes - January 24, 2010 Session
This session marked the twenty-fifth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!
On a day when our normal attendance was down due to the arrival of out-of-town guests and tournament fatigue, we welcomed Sara Boykan to the club for a quick couple of games on her way back up to Phoenix. Sara took first place in Division Two of Saturday's Teeny Tiny Tournament and is a bright and funny lady who will always be welcome at the Tucson clubs.
The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers,
and cheese this week.
The tournament rules division was joined by 3
players who played 20 games in which we scored 6,905 points for a 345.25
point-per-game average. Of the 11 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies
that went unchallenged.
Ed Saunders took top honors this week with a 3-0 record, 6 bingos, and a 431 pts per game average.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
- High Game - 463 points by Ed Saunders
- Low Win - 350 points by Sarah Jacobson
- High Loss - 382 points by Sarah Jacobson (Opponent at 395)
- Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.0000 bingos per game

- Weekly Anagram Challenge Sarah Jacobson provides us with our challenge this week. With a rack of AGINRST, Sarah played the bingo STARING, which has THREE useful anagrams. The "S" tile appears in three of the seven positions in this list of four words. Can you come up with them? (Answer in green in "Bingos" section below.)
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the And The Winner Takes A Bowwow Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a breed or type of dog. Ed Saunders walked the generic DOG out there for 10 pts but Sarah Jacobson took advantage of the genetic closeness between dogs and bears, scoring 23 with BRUIN to claim the $1.50 prize.
The second was the Go Fly A Kittiwake Contest for the highest scoring play
of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, any
bird. This time Sarah Jacobson went with the generic as she scored 20 pts
with BIRD but Ed Saunders headed for the
KITCHEN
to find the $1.50 lettuce from this contest.
None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $0.37 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $283.38 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.
The next session (January 31, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
• The Gem Show Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that is the name of, or that incorporates the name of somewhere
within it, a mineral, rock, or geological formation. (e.g. INLIERS, KOPPIES,
GAHNITES, EMERALDS, CRYSTAL, PEBBLES, BEDROCK, NEPHRITE, BOWLDERS, MOUNTAIN,
GARNETS, NUNATAK, SEAMOUNT, EARSTONE, HILLOCKS, etc.)
• A Word For The Ys Contest - A quarter of
dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that contains the letter "Y" somewhere within it.
(e.g. KYANIZED, MAYBUSH, ATEMOYA, HEGEMONY, YAUTIAS, MYOPIAS, YARMULKE,
SATYRIDS, DASYURE, PROSODY, YEGGMEN, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.80
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.37 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.80
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.80 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
