Session Notes - May 23, 2010 Session

This session marked the forty-first week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured a birthday cheescake selection ( in honor of Janis Clem's mmmmpppppttttthhhhh birthday last Sunday) along with the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, newtons, and cheese.

We welcomed two longtime friends of the club this week. Monique Kornell is a regular at the Speedway Club and makes her way out here to Oro Valley occasionally (though way too seldom). She brought along Richard Fields, visiting from Redmond, Washington (and looking into the possibility of moving back to Tucson this summer). Rich was a regular at the old Airport location of the Speedway Club before he headed out to Washington state about five years ago. We thoroughly enjoyed their visit (brief as it was) and look forward to seeing each of them here again whenever they can find their way.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 50 games in which we scored 18,295 points for a 365.9000 point-per-game average. Of the 43 recorded bingos we played, 1 was a phony that went unchallenged.

Bob Knouse claimed this week's top honors with a 5-2 record. Janis Clem also had a good week at 7-3.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This session's (May 23rd) contests were from the agile mind of Mickey Matz. Thank you, Mickey!
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was the Who You Play Matters !! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that incorporates the initials of your opponent. Janis Clem scored 83 pts with her LADDIES (LS), but Bob Knouse cried "fowl" and edged her out with his 86 pt BANTIES (ES) to claim the $5.25 prize.

The second was the Palindrome Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is a palindrome - a word that is spelled the same way either backwards or forwards. Ed Saunders thought he was gonna get AWA (38 pts) with the prize money but Carol Knouse gave him two hugs and told him to "kiss" the money goodbye with her 40 pt play of OXO to embrace the $5.25 prize.

None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $455.66 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session's (May 30th) contests are once again from the mind of Mickey Matz. Thanks, Mickey !
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (May 30, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
The "Lowest Scoring Bingo" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the lowest scoring play of a bingo. Lowest "possible" is 55 pts. (e.g. OOrALIs, OIdIOId, SEquOIA, zOIsITE, jOINERy, etc.)
The "Highest Scoring Phony" Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a phony word. (e.g. , zinciest*, restains*, elusiver*, mookyboo*, satines*, beanpot*, toadier*, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $2.24 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
