Session Notes - August 23, 2009 Session

This session marked the fourth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips and newtons this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 26 games in which we scored 10,138 points for a 389.9231 point-per-game average. Of the 36 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence was this week's big winner, going 6-1 + 581 with 14 bingos and a new personal high game thus far this season, a 573 point game.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "W" Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "W" somewhere within it. Carol Knouse gave it a shot with AWE for 26 pts, Sarah Jacobson thought she wud take it with 30 pts for WUD, Bob Knouse had a different view of the situation with his 42 pt VIEW, Ed Saunders thought he'd wax the competition with his 46 pt play of WAX, but Richard Spence rode his 49 pt play of JOW/WAGED to the $3.75 prize.

The second was the This One's For The Birds Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a bird of some kind. Richard Spence thought he'd duck out the door with his 22 pt play of DUCK, Carol Knouse clucked at that, playing HEN for 29 pts, but Ed Saunders cooked both of their geese with a 68 pt play of ANSERINE (the true geese) and flew away with the $3.75 prize.

As described above, Ed Saunders and Richard Spence racked up games of 575 and 573 respectively to split the $0.93 in the Historic Club # 565 Progressive Jackpot. Ed picks up $0.47 (and the extra penny) due to his advancing age and the accompanying limited future earnings potential. Young Richard scores a $0.46 payday.

Also described above, Richard and Ed split the $4.84 in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot with Richard's IDEATIONS and Ed's SALIVATES. Each walks away with $2.42.

In the meantime, Bob Knouse was launching a solo attack on the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot, scoring 113 pts with his Triple Word play of PLUCKIER and laying claim to his own personal payoff of $2.42

Ed's $6.64 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot this week and $0.93 shall be added to it, taking that Jackpot up to $41.26 for next session. We have paid out $44.13 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (August 30, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
"LN" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "L" and "N", in any order, somewhere within it (e.g. LORGNON, NIELLOS, LALLING, NUMBLES, BLUNGES, LASAGNE, THEELINS, INSULAR, RANULAS, ALENCON, LINALOOL, etc.)
I Talk To The Trees Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a tree, bush or shrub of some kind (e.g. DURMAST, BOOJUMS, CATALPA, MAHOGANY, SHADBLOW, SUMACHS, SYCAMINE, LINDENS, PALMYRA, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $41.26 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
