Session Notes - November 22, 2009 Session
This session marked the sixteenth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!
We welcomed long-time Speedway Club player Mickey Matz and William Barfuss, a New Mexico resident who is on an extended North American odyssey, to club this week. We enjoyed their company and competition and hope to see both of them at club again.
The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers,
and some salsa and cheese this week, along with some grapes from Sarah Jacobson.
The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 32 games
in which we scored 11,653 points for a 364.16 point-per-game average. Of
the 32 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.
Bob Knouse took top honors this week with a 3-1 +95 pt record and raised his club rating 35 pts to 1296 in the process.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the "IOU" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter triplet "IOU", in any order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders got right into the ol' ROUTINE for 62 pts but Bob Knouse OUTBIDS (73 pts) the field this time around to take home the $5.25 prize.
The second was the True Colors Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a color. Bob Knouse played JADE for 12 pts, Janis Clem played the highly imaginative rougy* for 32, but Ed Saunders hooked his ROUTINE onto the already played RED to form ROUTINE/REDE for 62 pts to claim the $5.25 prize.
Ed Saunders looked at his rack of AINOSTV and started looking for an open "O" on the board. The open "O" was indeed there, but Ed also noticed an open "LA" higher on the board. Ed's resulting 9 letter bingo LAVATIONS play scored 74 pts and the $8.78 stashed away in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot.
Ed's $14.03 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.31 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $130.88 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.
The next session (November 29, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• "XYZ" Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that contains one or more of the letters "X", "Y",
AND "Z", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. AXOLOTL, XYLOTOMY,
KYANIZE, YOKOZUNA, ZOYSIAS, ZACATONS, CABAZON, HOGMANAY, SALPINX, etc.)
• Oooh! I Ate Too Much - - - -!!! Contest -
A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in
the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within
it, the name of a food or type of food. (e.g. BROCOLI, PIEPLANT, CANNOLI,
BIRYANI, YAKITORI, BENDEES, PEARMAIN, TABOOLEY, RAMBUTAN, RUBABOO, SATSUMA,
etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $50.04
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
