Session Notes - September 13, 2009 Session

THERE WILL BE NO CLUB ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2009 DUE TO THE PARTICIPATION OF THE DIRECTOR IN THE ALBUQUERQUE TOURNAMENT ON THAT WEEKEND. CLUB WILL RESUME ITS NORMAL SCHEDULE ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH.

This session marked the seventh week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed Travis Carlson to the Northwest Club for the first time. Travis has played a few times at the Speedway Club and shown himself to be good company and a strong competitor. He is more than welcome anytime at either club.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips and newtons this week plus some salsa provided by Karen Lundeen.

The tournament rules division was joined by 4 players who played 24 games in which we scored 9,170 points for a 382.08 point-per-game average. Of the 32 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence dominated play this week with a perfect 4-0 record + 695 pts spread, 10 bingos for a 2.50 bingo per game average and a pair of 500 games (508 and 501) en route to a 483.25 pts per game average on the session. Way to go!

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "O, I" Guess We'll Have A Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "O" and "I", in any order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders bid 67 pts with his play of BRIDOONS, Richard Spence upped the dosage on that bid with a 74 pt play of CODEINAS, but Travis Carlson OUTBIDS the field with 79 pts and wins the $3.00 prize.

The second was the Them's Fightin' Words Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a type of warfare, fight, or conflict of some kind. Richard Spence REFOUGHT off all the opposition (there was none. . . .) and took control of the $3.00 prize.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $0.75 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $58.56 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (September 27, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
"Q" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "Q" somewhere within it (e.g. MBAQANGA, EQUISETA, QUINNAT, ALIQUOT, QIVIUTS, SHEQALIM, DIQUATS, EQUINOX, etc.)
Location, Location, Location Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a location of some kind (e.g. BRAZILS, KITCHEN, COLORADO, megaCITY, SUBURBS, MARINAS, BOSTONS PARKway, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $42.94 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.75 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.68 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.68 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
