Session Notes - June 13, 2010 Session

This session marked the forty-fourth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 66 games in which we scored 224,802 points for a 375.7879 point-per-game average. Of the 71 recorded bingos we played, 5 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Janis Clem claimed this week's top honors with a 7-2 record.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This session's (June 13th) contests were submitted by the team of Janis Clem and Sarah Jacobson. Thank you, Ladies!
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was the What On Earth? Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a recognizable geological structure or component. Sarah Jacobson and Bob Yarmchuk tried to invoke the power of the sea with SEAling 62 and SEAnces 77 respectively, Ed Saunders said "Of quartz this will win" as he laid down his 66 pt play of ONYX, Richard Spence thought his 82 pt play of nicoTINs was smokin', but Travis Carlson dished the real dirt as he cultivated 89 pts and the $5.25 prize with his play of HOTBEDS (a bed of rich soil).

The second was The Cyberspace Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a recognizable computer part, component, or term. Richard Spence tried to get things going with a BOOT for 34 pts, but Ed Saunders dug deep into the guts of the subject with a 72 pt play of BOARDing to claim the $5.25 prize.

Ed Saunders was encouraged when he saw his first 9 letter bingo of the session. It was a 72 pt HEARTENER through the "EN" combo already on the board. A little later, Ed showed that once in awhile good things happen in pairs, as his 65 pt play of SOMETIMES through the second "ME" secured the full $2.24 payout from the 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpot.

None of the other Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $507.32 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session's (June 20th) contests came from the unique and agile mind of Travis Carlson. Thanks, Travis!
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (June 20, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
The Contest Of Redundancy Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that contains the most repeats of a single letter. Words with more repeats will trump those with less. (e.g. ZYZZYVA, EXEGETE, ATALAYA, DIDDLED, OLOROSO, ASSESSES, etc.)
The Biggest Loser Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play from a game that he or she ended up losing.
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $8.60 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $8.60 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
