Session Notes - December 13, 2009 Session

This session marked the nineteenth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers, and some salsa this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 4 players who played 34 games in which we scored 11,831 points for a 347.9706 point-per-game average. Of the 26 recorded bingos we played, only one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors this week with a 6-0 +552 pt record, 13 bingos and a 412.33 pt per game average..

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Catch A "CAB" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C", "A", and "B", in any order, somewhere within it. No one won this contest last week and $4.50 was carried over to this week's payoff. Richard Spence caught some CABS for 24 pts, but Sarah Jacobson caught the "right" CAB, scored 25 pts and rode away with the $7.50 prize.

The second was the Walk A Mile In Their Shoes Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a shoe or type of footwear. Janis Clem laced up a 16 pt CLEAT but Richard Spence hooked USED onto FLAT to form USED/FLATS for 36 points and walked comfortably away with the $3.00 prize.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $0.75 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $158.81 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (December 20, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• "SamTimer" Contest - In recognition of Sam Kantimathi, head of SamTimer and one of Scrabble's most prominent benefactors, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "ST", in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. BROWNIEST, ASTHENIC, STUPEFY, HERSTORY, ORGIAST, ISTHMUS, MISTEUK, STRETTO, etc.)
• Holiday Season Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of something directly connected to one of the holidays being celebrated between now and January 2nd, 2010. (e.g. MENORAH, LANGSYNE, CRECHES, PRESENTS, DREIDLS, CHESTNUT, UNITIES, PURPOSE, MESSIAH, YULETIDE, RESOLVED, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $53.22 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $4.49 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $11.96 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $0.75 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
