Session Notes - April 11, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-fifth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed the company and strong play of North Carolinians Brenda and Ed Davis, passing through Tucson on an extended roadtrip around the country. Brenda and Ed fit right into the mix and are more than welcome to stop by anytime they find themselves in Tucson.

The goodies table featured a tray of cupcakes and pastries brought in by Sarah Jacobson along with the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, newtons, and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 56 games in which we scored 20,721 points for a 370.0179 point-per-game average. Of the 58 recorded bingos we played, 7 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors with a 5-1 record, 14 bingos and a 443.8333 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Gotta Dance! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a dance. Visiting player Brenda Davis had the high qualifying play with her 78 pt phony BELLYed* but graciously declined any prize money that she qualified for. Lewis Saul scored 13 pts with REJIG, Janis Clem made 31 pts with VINE, and Sarah Jacobson took home the $3.75 prize with her 33 pt TAP.

The second was the No BS! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that does not include either a "Blank" tile or an "S" tile anywhere within it. Sarah Jacobson made 48 pts with ZIN, Janis Clem and Brenda Davis both scored 72 pts with PAINTIER and REVOLTER respectively, Ed Davis outscored them with OUTRIDE for 76, Ed Saunders donned an 83 pt HAIRNET, but Richard Spence exerted his influence on the outcome with an 84 pt play of EXERTING to claim the $3.75 prize.

Brenda Davis scored 104 pts with her play of requotes* but declined the $1.49 prize for the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot which will be carried over to the next session.

None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $0.93 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $383.92 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (April 18, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
