Session Notes - May 9, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-ninth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed newcomer Natalie McGee to club this week. Natalie got her first taste of club Scrabble at the Speedway Club last Thursday and is checking out all the local Scrabble action. We hope to see her often and watch her learn and grow.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, newtons, and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 64 games in which we scored 22,020 points for a 344.0625 point-per-game average. Of the 45 recorded bingos we played, 4 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence claimed this week's top honors with a 4 - 1 record, 11 bingos and a 429.2 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Golden Spike Contest for the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to connections or joinings of some sort. Janis Clem cooked up some ROUX for 22 pts, Richard Spence scored 59 with enduRING, Bob Yarmchuk SNARLED things up for 75, Lewis Saul tied things up more loosely with BASTING for 76, but Sarah Jacobson pulled the string on all of ' em with 80 pts for STRINGed. Sarah tied down the $5.25 prize.

The second was the "O,U" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that has either of the letter couplets "OU" or "UO" somewhere within it. Ed Saunders and Sarah Jacobson both played YOU for 17 and 21 pts respectively, Janis served up some more ROUX for the same 22 pts, Lewis Saul flew his 28 pts in on an OUZEL, but Richard Spence scored 34 pts with his COUPE to drive off with the $5.25 prize.

Lewis Saul scored 102 pts with his phoney bingo whinzes* to split the $2.62 in the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot with Richard Spence. Richard earned his $1.31 share with his 101 pt play of OVERLEAP.

None of the other Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $437.66 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session's (May 16th) contests were submitted by the renowned writing tandem of Janis Clem and Sarah Jacobson. Thanks to both.
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.
