Session Notes - November 8, 2009 Session

This session marked the fourteenth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers, cheese and some salsa this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 4 players who played 24 games in which we scored 9,559 points for a 398.2917 point-per-game average. Of the 39 recorded bingos we played, seven were phonies that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence took top honors this week with a 6-1 +577 pt record.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Power Play Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the five high point tiles "J", "K", "Q", "X", and "Z" somewhere within it. Janis Clem scored 50 pts with XU, Sarah Jacobson got 53 for JUG, Ed Saunders hit the heights with APEX for 60, but Richard Spence held himself to a yet higher standard and scored 110 pts with QUIXOTE to claim the $3.00 prize.

The second was the You Animal!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of an animal or type of animal other than a bird. Sarah Jacobson and Richard Spence both led out an OX for 39 and 51 pts respectively, but Ed Saunders had an ape up his sleeve and scored 60 pts with APEx and 89 with nAIvest (an AI being a three-toed sloth) to slink back into the forest with his $3.00 prize.

The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot was kicked around a little bit this week with 3 plays qualifying for a share of the $4.11 in the kitty. Richard Spence claimed a third of it ($1.37) with his 110 pt play of QUIXOTE, Ed Saunders picked up the other two thirds of the pot with a 101 pt phony (overswam*) and a 100 pt double-double (BESTIAL) to claim the remaining $2.74.

Ed's $5.74 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $0.75 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $103.17 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (November 15, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
"NL" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "NL", in any order, somewheere within it. (e.g. SUNLIGHT, LINNETS, LORGNONS, LINOLOOL, OENOLOGY, LOLLING, FENNELS, JARGONEL, etc.)
This One's For The Birds Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a bird or type of type of bird.
