Session Notes - February 7, 2010 Session

There will be no club on Valentine's Day, February 14th, due to the participation of the club director in the Phoenix 2010 tournament on that weekend. Club will resume its normal schedule on Sunday, February 21st. Have a great week!

This session marked the twenty-seventh week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers, and cheese plus some girl scout and other cookies provided by Ed Saunders and Sarah Jacobson this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 46 games in which we scored 15,879 points for a 345.1957 point-per-game average. Of the 31 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors this week with a 5-1 record, 12 bingos, and a 406 pts per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Gem Show Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a mineral, rock, or geological formation. Nobody came up with any jewels last week, so the $3.00 prize rolled over to this session. Ed Saunders played the only entry, scoring the $6.75 prize and 20 pts with his generic ROCK.

The second was the Well, You Can Call Me JAY! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "J" somewhere within it. Sarah Jacobson racked up 42 pts with JEAN, Mickey Matz made 44 with JOLES, but Ed Saunders' JEERS (56 pts) won the day and the $3.75 prize.

None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $0.93 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $301.55 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

Travis Carlson provides us with our regular contests for the next (February 21, 2010) session. If you have original ideas for contests or favorite contests from the past, let me know and we'll see if we can get them in the mix.

The next session (February 21, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
"E.G." Set An Example Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "E" and "G", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. GHOULIE, ANTIGENE, THEGNLY, UPSTAGE, LIGAMENT, MANGROVE, HEXAGON, etc.)
Out Of This World Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word thatis, or contains somewhere within it, the name of something found in outer space. (e.g. STARfish, MARTIAN, MOONier, ALIENor, QUASARS, ASTEROID, SUNdial, GRAVITY, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.48 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.93 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
