Session Notes - December 6, 2009 Session
This session marked the eighteenth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!
This week, Speedway Club player Mickey Matz made his second appearance at the Northwest Club and fit right into the personality mix. Mick is welcome in Oro Valley anytime.
The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, crackers,
and some salsa this week.
WE INTRODUCED A POPULAR NEW WRINKLE to the mix this week
with the incorporation of the Hasbro/Encore Scrabble (Champion Edition)
Software into the club competition. In sessions where we have an uneven
number of tournament division participants, the game will be available as
an optional opponent for the odd man/woman out in a given round. The game
(or games) played against the computer would count for club and individual
stats and for that evening's standings and contests. There will need to
be some tweaking of rules and procedures involving the game but, for now,
these are the main points:
1. The dictionary used in the game is OSPD4, which does not include words
on the expurgated or "POO" list (words considered vulgar or offensive).
You will need to be careful in your games. "POO" list words will
be challenged off.
2. Only the standard "Tournament" setting will be acceptable for
inclusion in club stats, standings, and contests.
3. Players must play against a setting rated higher than their current club
rating.
4. The game must be entered on the player's weekly scorecard as a normal
game would be with the rating of the computer opponent listed in the Opponent's
Rating space and all bingos played by both the human and the Computer player
listed separately in the "Bingos" notation area of the scorecard.
(This will allow club statistics to retain some semblance of meaning in
the future)
5. Further tweaking of the rules and procedures will be made as necessary
to keep this option viable in the future.
Carol Knouse took top honors this week with a 4-1 +201 pt record.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the Catch A "CAB" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C", "A", and "B", in any order, somewhere within it. There were no takers at the cab stand this week so the $4.50 fare will roll over to the till next week.
The second was the Oooh! I Drank Too Much - - - - !!! Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a beverage or type of beverage. Sarah Jacobson got us drowsy with a FIZ (as in Sloe Gin Fiz) for 15 pts, Janis Clem woke us right back up with JOES (as in a "cuppa") for 29 pts, but Ed Saunders hooked his RELISTS bingo to an unsuspecting "bee" to get a "buzz" on and form BEER/RELISTS for 70 pts and the $4.50 prize.
Ed saunders was set to play FEASTING through an open "I" when Bob Knouse made a parallel play and changed the open "I" to an open "IN". Setting the "G" off to the side of his rack and rearranging the remaining letters, Ed found FASTENING through the open "IN" for 78 pts and the $2.43 that was in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot.
Ed's $6.93 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.12 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $148.31 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.
The next session (December 13, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• Catch A "CAB" Contest - $4.50 plus
a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in
the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C",
"A", and "B", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g.
CABEZON, ABSCISED, SETBACK, AEROBICS, CAPABLE, BECAUSE, CHAMBER, etc.)
• Walk A Mile In Their Shoes Contest - A quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name
of a shoe or type of footwear. (e.g. CHOPINES, FLIPFLOP, SANDALS, TENNIES,
WINGTIPS, BOOTery, MOCking, SNOWSHOE, BALMORAL, PUMPing, LOAFERS, etc.)
