Session Notes - April 4, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-fourth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, crackers, and some chocolate and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 3 players who played 22 games in which we scored 8,497 points for a 386.2273 point-per-game average. Of the 28 recorded bingos we played, none were phonies that went unchallenged.

The Computer Game thumped the human contingent this week, going 5-0 +261.

Ed Saunders took top honors among the humans with a 2-2 record, 9 bingos and a 409.00 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This week's (April 4th) contests were submitted by Travis Carlson. If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know. We'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was the Captain Hook Contest for the highest scoring play containing at least three "hooks" (Creates at least three new words in addition to the main word). Janis Clem scored 38 pts with her triple-hook play of ABET but Ed Saunders caught a ride to the winner's circle with a 41 pt play of TAXI/AB/XU/IN and collected the $2.25 fare.

The second was the A Contest. . .And All That Jazz for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a musical instrument, genre, or performer. Lewis Saul played a North African OUD (a stringed instrument) for 14 pts but Ed Saunders answered the bell with his phony BELLer* for 24 pts and the $2.25 prize.

None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $0.56 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $376.42 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (April 11, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Gotta Dance! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incoporates the name of somewhere within it, a dance. (e.g. SARABAND, MAXIXES, TANGOed, JIGsawn, FOXTROTS, GAVOTte, LINDIES, cREELed, unTWIST, RHUMBAS, etc.)
No BS! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that does not include a blank (B) or an "S" tile (e.g. CAZIQUE, QUIXOTRY, JAROVIZE, WATERZOOI, ZECCHINO, KOLHOZY, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
