Session Notes - January 3, 2010 Session
This session marked the twenty-second week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!
The goodies table featured wonderful cookies from the Knouse's, delicious
spice cake from Janis Clem, chips and salsa from Karen Lundeen and the usual
selection of chips, newtons, crackers, and cheese this week.
The tournament rules division was joined by 7
players who played 52 games in which we scored 19,002 points for a 365.4231
point-per-game average. Of the 50 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies
that went unchallenged.
2010 started with a reverberating BANG!!! as all
four of the Progressive Jackpots fell. Richard Spence
led the onslaught, picking up $55.65!!! for his
140 pt Triple-Triple ARIDNESS
(played through the first "S") and another $3.18 for playing two
9+Letter Bingos-UNSTAINED
70 pts through the "UN" and REMINDING
86 pts through the second "IN".
Ed Saunders joined in the assault with a 102 pt
play of EXTRUDED ($6.92) and a 578
pt game ($14.39).
Ed Saunders took top honors this week with a 5-1 record, 13 bingos, and a 436.5 pts per game average.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the Do The "DE-ED" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that begins - or ends - with the letters "E" and "D", in either order. Richard Spence thought he's clean up with a 9 letter 70 pt bingo of UNSTAINED, Janis Clem attacked the competition with 72 pts for JOUSTED, Carol Knouse bested those, scoring 83 with WORSTED, Sarah Jacobson ( 87 pts) PROWLED around the prize for awhile, Bob Knouse TINKERED with it for 98 pts, but Ed Saunders stuck out from the pack and won the $5.25 prize with 102 pts for EXTRUDED.
The second was the Baby New Year Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a baby or young animal of some kind. While Sarah Jacobson was prowling around in the other contest, she hooked her 87 pt play of PROWLED onto an existing "KI" to form KID. KID was the only entry in this contest and Sarah walked away with the $5.25 prize.
All four of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and each shall start fresh from zero next session. We have paid out $258.45 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.
The next session (January 10, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
• Double "AA" Contest - A quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play which includes the two-letter word "AA" as a part
of it. The separate and distinct play of the two-letter word must be a part
of the play to qualify. One of the words formed must
actually be the two-letter word "AA".
• Who's In Charge Here? Contest - A quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name
of a person, FIGURE, or position of authority (e.g. BARONET, BEYLICS, PASHADOM,
MONARCHY, SAGAMORE, NIZAMATE, JACKpot, JARLDOM, LORDosis, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A
sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of
9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
