Session Notes - May 2, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-eighth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed Bob and Carol Knouse back from a two and a half month hiatus while they entertained visitors from the frozen tundras of Pennsylvania.

The goodies table featured a few dozen delicious cookies brought in by Lewis Saul along with the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, newtons, and cheese.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 52 games in which we scored 18,644 points for a 358.5385 point-per-game average. Of the 44 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Bob Yarmchuk shook off the rust quickly and, in only his second week back at club since 2004, claimed this week's top honors with a 4 - 0 record and a 413.00 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Foul Vowel Contest for the highest scoring play of a "vowel dump" word that consists of more than 70% vowels and at least 3 letters total. Bob Knouse got right back into the mix with an 8 pt play of UREA, Ed Saunders set his sights on the money with UVEA for 24 pts, but Janis Clem's 26 pt ship came in at the QUAI and she sailed off with the $5.25 prize.

The second was the Sticks And Stones Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of something physically or emotionally hurtful. Carol Knouse scored 14 with CRUEL, Bob Knouse led the crowd in 27 pts worth of JEERS, Lewis Saul dissed the small dog in the litter with RUNTIER for 64 pts, gardener Sarah Jacobson spotted some WILTING for 80 pts, but Ed Saunders didn't like the lead actress in the play and thought he'd PANdora for 84 pts and the $5.25 prize.

None of the Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $424.54 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (May 9, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Golden Spike Contest - On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory, Officials and workers of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways met to drive in the "Golden Spike", symbolizing completion of the first transcontinental railroad which joined the nation from coast to coast. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to connections or joinings of any sort (e.g. GLUIEST, VELCROS, QUOINED, SHIMMED, TREENAIL, COUPLING, SEWINGS, JOINERY, etc.) . If your word is "IFFY", you will need to write a sentence connecting your word to connections or joinings in some manner. Make the connection and you might connect with some money this week.
"O, U" Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that has either of the letter couplets "OU" or "UO" somewhere within it (e.g. , OUTDONE, BUOYING, SEAMOUNT, QUOITED, DUODENA, LANGUOR, HOUSEBOY, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $9.70 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
