Session Notes - May 31, 2009 Session

This session marked the forty-first week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2008-2009 season!

We welcomed, and enjoyed the company and strong play of, William Barfuss from New Mexico who was in town on a work hiatus.

The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips and salsa.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 34 games in which we scored 12,875 points for a 378.7 point-per-game average. Of the 43 recorded bingos we played, four were phonies that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Pond Life Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some form of life form normally associated with a pond or small lake. We had two entries that met the pond life criteria. Karen Lundeen scored 15 pts with TOAD, while Ed Saunders came up with the shore bird WILLET for 27 pts and the $3.00 win.

The second was the "SH" We're Having A Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "SH", in that order, somewhere within it. This was a shootout between Richard Spence, who scored 76 pts with SHOOTOUT, and Ed Saunders, who took his show (and the $3.00 prize) on the road with an 89 point play of ROADSHOW.

Ed Saunders also cashed in on the 100+ Play Progressive jackpo with a 102 pt play of QUINONE worth $2.06.

Ed's $8.06 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. We have paid out $421.95 in prizes so far this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (June 7, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
Gimme Candy Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some form of candy (e.g. BONBONS, SNICKERS, fulMARS, KISSers, TOOTSIE, GUMBALL, JUJUBES, PRALINES, SKITTLES, periDOTS, etc.)
The Bird Is The Word Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some sort of bird (e.g. WHYDAHS, HOACTZIN, CARACARA, OILBIRD, WHIMBREL, DOTTEREL, DUNLINS, CURLEWS, APTERYX, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $30.26 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
