Session Notes - April 26, 2009 Session
This session marked the thirty-seventh week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s
2008-2009 season!
The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips. Thanks to
all who provided snacks for the group.
The tournament rules division was joined by 2 players who played 16 games
in which we scored 6,513 points for a 407.0625 point-per-game average. Of
the 29 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
- High Game - 590 points by Ed Saunders
- Low Win - 380 points by Richard Spence
- High Loss - 417 points by Richard Spence (Opponent at 452)
- Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.3750 bingos per game
- New Personal High Games of 2008-2009 Season - Ed Saunders 590 pts, NW Club # 565, 590 pts

- The Ultimate "Two-Play Out" Late in a lop-sided final game of the session, Ed Saunders played the bingo GARLICS and replenished his rack with a draw of ILNQUVV. (So you're thinkin' to yourself. . . ."Two-play out? Waddaya. . . .nuts?!!!?") Richard Spence countered with the nonbingo GRANDER off the "G" in GARLICS and drew 4 tiles to empty the bag. So. . . .Play #1 of the "Two-Play Out". . . .Ed dropped ANVIL from the "A' in GRANDER, leaving him with QUV on his rack. Richard came back with DAG/ID/LA from the "I" in ANVIL. Meanwhile. . . .down in the lower left corner of the board, Row 13 was set up this way - 13A was open, 13B had an "I", 13C was open, 13D had an "I", 13E was open, 13F had a "T", and 13G was open. And it was there that an unbelieving Ed dropped QIVIUT for a 36 pt out play against an unbelieving Richard, thus finishing off a 590 to not-so-much thumping.
- Weekly Anagram Challenge Richard Spence provides a double challenge this week. With a rack of AEINRST, Richard played the bingo STEARIN, which is one of the NINE bingos found in that rack (that EVERY Scrabble player should know). Also, with a rack of AEILNST, Richard played ELASTIN, which has SIX anagrams. Can you come up with them? (Answer in green in "Bingos" section below.)
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the Uh, Can I Buy A Vowel? Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word (at least 6 letters long) that contains the fewest number of vowels. Richard Spence could'nt complain about this contest. His 32 pt play of KVETCH snatched up the $1.50 prize. None of the other entries had less than 2 vowels.
The second was the "K" Is For Kontest for the highest scoring play of a word containg the letter "K". Richard Spence scored 38 pt for PARKED, but Ed Saunders squeezed 53 pts out of his play of PEEKS and scooped up the $1.50 prize.
Ed Saunders knocked off two of the Progressive Jackpots this week. Ed scored 104 pts for FRITZES and 100 pts for EQUATOR to claim the $1.30 in the 100+ Play.
In the final game of the session, Ed racked up 4 bingos, two 40+ point plays, and the unlikely "out" play described above to total a new club season high game of 590 pts to claim the $13.35 in this week's Club # 565 Progressive Jackpot.
Ed's $16.15 winnings were donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.37 added to it. We have paid out $391.40 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.
The next session (May 3, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• Communications Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, a form or method
of communication (e.g. SONGbird, JARGONel, DIALECT, PIGEONS, EPISTLER, TELEVISE,
KVETCHED, SCROLLS, EMAILING, LINEups, COOEEING, GARDYLOO, etc.)
• Starts With "W" Contest - A quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "W" (e.g. WHIMBREL,
WAGGONS, WEASANDS, WINDLES, WADMAALS, WHYDAHS, WOMMERAS, WAXWING, WOODWAX,
WURTZITE, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $27.08
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more
points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.42 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
