Session Notes - August 24, 2008 Session

This session marked the fourth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

Sarah Jacobson came bearing fresh blueberries and Karen Lundeen brought a wonderful cake and some salsa to add to the nuts, raisins, and chips adorning the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 32 games in which we scored 11,979 points for a 374.34 point-per-game average. Of the 36 recorded bingos we played, two were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "PROS" Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the positive words "PRO", "FOR", "WITH", or "IN" somewhere within it. Karen Lundeen scored 28 pts with her play of WITH, Richard Spence leaned on that with his 91 pt play of LEANING, but Janis Clem laid the final claim on the $3.00 prize with her 94 pt play of DEEDING.

The second was the "CONS" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the negative words or prefixes "CON", "ANTI", "NON", or "OUT". No one was in a negative mood this week, so we'll continue this contest next time with the $3.00 prize carried over until someone wins it.

Ed Saunders almost ran the table on the Progressive Jackpots this week. Ed started by playing the 9 letter bingo ACIDIFIER through an existing "IF" for 65 points and the $11.57 in the pot. He followed that by picking up the 93 cents in the 100+ Play Jackpot with a 109 pt double-double of SAVELOY en route to a monster 575 point game which took the $14.73 in the Club # 565 Progressive Jackpot. Ed finishes the session with winnings of $27.23.

No one cashed in on the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot this week and it shall have $0.93 added to it. We have paid out $58.90 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (Aug 31, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
Mind Your "Q"s Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "Q" somewhere within it. (e.g. MBAQANGA, QUINTAIN, PERIQUES, SQUILLA, QUINOAS, EQUISETA, OBLIQUE, QUOINED, USQUABAE, etc.)
"Cons" Contest! - $3.00 plus a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the negative words or prefixes "CON", "ANTI", "NON", or "OUT" somewhere within it. (e.g. CONATUS, ANTIRED, NONACID, OUTGOING, ALENCON, SCANTILY, IONONES, DIMOUTS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $7.84 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
