This session marked the eighth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!
Bob and Carol Knouse returned to club today bearing sliced apples and caramel dip, Karen Lundeen brought some Fiddle Faddles, Ed Saunders put out some fig newtons, and Janis Clem added yet more chips to the normal array of chips adorning the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.
We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.
The tournament rules division was joined by 6 players who played 36 games in which we scored 13,254 points for a 368.17 point-per-game average. Of the 44 recorded bingos we played, five were phoneys that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
Some interesting bingos:
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was The Colors Of Our Lives Contest awarded to the player who
turned in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates within
it, the name of a color. Richard Spence turned in a 17 pt play of CYAN,
but he also had a 68 pt bingo of TANGLES
to guarantee the win and the $4.50 prize.
The second was the "G" What A Contest for the highest scoring
play of a word that begins with the letter "G". Those who've eaten
cooked okra know that GLUTENS (Janis Clem - 67
pts) can be pretty gross but Karen Lundeen's 74 pt play was GROSSER
yet, but Richard Spence made enough noise to win the $4.50 prize with his
77 pt play of GRUNTERS.
Ed Saunders knocked off a couple of the Progressive Jackpots this week,
garnering 110 pts for his bingo SHEWING. Then,
facing a "Bingo Out Or Lose" situation in a different game, Ed
had a rack of AEIPST? and one open bingo line
through an existing "TI" in the middle of the board.
Ed managed to find one of the two playable 9s and dropped PAInTIEST
for 64 pts and the win. (See if you can come up with the other 9 just for
the heck of it. . . .)
Ed's $7.82 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on either of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.12 added to it. We have paid out $109.42 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.
The next session (September 28, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• Show Me The Money! Contest - A quarter of
dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere
within it, some form of money. (e.g. QINTARS, PATACAS, DRACHMAS, TWOPENNY,
OUGUIYA, TAMBALAS, SIMOLEON, WAMPUMS, QINDARKA, etc.)
• "V" Is For Vicugna Contest! - A
quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the
highest scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "V".
(e.g. VICUGNA, VIRAGOS, VALORIZE, VULGATE, VAVASOR, VEEPEES, VOLUTIN, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.05
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $3.91 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of
9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
