Session Notes - October 19, 2008 Session
This session marked the eleventh week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!
We welcomed Toni Larson to club this week. She represented our recreational
division this week and held her own in four games against tournament players.
The normal array of chips adorned the goodies table today along with newtons,
trail mix provided by Karen Lundeen, grapes courtesy of Sarah Jacobson,
salsa, crackers and cheese. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.
We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.
The tournament rules division was joined by 3 players who played 16 games in which we scored5,503 points for a 343.9375 point-per-game average. Of the 12 recorded bingos we played, none
was a phoney that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
- High Game - 473 points by Ed Saunders
- Low Win - 305 points by Karen Lundeen
- High Loss - 353 points by Karen Lundeen (Opponent at 390)

- Weekly Anagram Challenge Ed Saunders provides our challenge this week. With a rack of AENPRTT, Ed played the bingo PATTERN, which has only ONE rather uncommon anagram. Can you come up with it? (Answer in "Bingos" section below.)
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the Creatures Of The Deep! Contest awarded to the player
who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates
within it, the name of some form of underwater-dwelling life form. Ed Saunders
had the only entry this week, hooking the "A" in JAG on the end
of an existing COD to form CODA
for 31 pts and the $2.25 prize.
The second was the Just Call Me "AL" Contest for the highest scoring
play of a word that contains the letter couplet "AL". Ed Saunders
wins this with a 32 pt play of ZOARIAL to pick
up the $2.25 prize.
Ed's $4.50 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. We have paid out $130.78 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.
The next session (October 26, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• Clothes Make The Winner! Contest - A quarter
of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest
scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of
somewhere within it, some item of clothing or clothing accessory. (e.g.
GEWGAWS, DJELLABA, FILIBEG, MOZETTA, JODHPUR, PYJAMAS, TITFERS, HUIPILS,
CHOPINE, EARRINGS, etc.)
• To "BE" Or Not To "BE" Contest!
- A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in
the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "BE",
in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. BEWRAYS, ASTILBE, ABERRANT, ARBELEST,
BELDAME, FRISBEE, AMBERINA, MISBEGUN, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.47
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $6.33 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.42 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
