Session Notes - January 18, 2009 Session

This session marked the twenty-fourth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, and chocolate plus a delicious carrot cake brought by Carol and Bob Knouse and a box of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts provided by Monique Kornell. The leftover carrot cake and macadamia nuts lasted all the way til Monday. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

The tournament rules division was joined by 6 players who played 28 games in which we scored 10,459 points for a 373.56 point-per-game average. Of the 31 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the MLK Jr. Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with any of the letters "M", "L", "K", or "J". Carol Knouse tried to smoke the opposition with KEF for 20 pts, Janis Clem moved past that with a 44 pt play of MOVE, Richard Spence danced right by Janis with his 49 pt JOTA, but Ed Saunders played the lewdest word of the contest with his 73 pt play of LEWDEST to score the $4.50 prize.

The second was the Dance, Film, And Theater Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that pertains in some direct way to dance, film, or theater. Janis Clem tried her 44 pt MOVE again, Richard Spence was still dancing his 49 pt JOTA, but Carol Knouse thanked the Academy of Scrabble for her $4.50 award after her 66 pt play of WINNERS.

Ed Saunders launched a double assault on the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot, scoring 100 for his play of EXACTOR, and 116 pts for ENJOYERS. Ed picks up $2.24 for his high scoring "E" words.

Ed's $6.74 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.12 added to it. We have paid out $280.44 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (January 25, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• A New Beginning Contest - In honor of the Inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains in some direct way to beginnings (e.g. DAWNING, FRESHLY, ABORNING, KICKOFF, ARRIVAL, STARTUP, INITIAL, etc.)
• Who's In Charge Here? Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a leader or governmental official of some kind (e.g. NIZAMATE, MAYORAL, EARLDOM, PASHALIK, GOVERNOR, AMEERATE, LORDOSIS, CALIPHS, PRINCELY, MONARCHY, etc.).
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $18.12 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $4.49 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $5.61 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
