Session Notes - November 16, 2008 Session
This session marked the fifteenth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009
season!
The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips, newtons,
some more chips and salsa from Karen Lundeen, baked cheese crunchies from
Sarah Jacobson, and a plate of scrumptious brownies from Carol and Bob Knouse.
Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.
15,662 points for a 372.9 point-per-game average. Of the 48 recorded bingos we played, two
were phoneys that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
- High Game - 531 points by Ed Saunders
- Low Win - 335 points by Bob Knouse
- High Loss - 395 points by Richard Spence (Opponent at 429)
- Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.3333 bingos per game
- New Personal High Games of 2008-2009 Season - none
- New Personal High Plays of 2008-2009 Season - none
- I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, Whatta Game!! - Bob Knouse reported that he drew and played all 9 "I"s in his game with Janis Clem this Sunday. . . . Bob. . . .We feel your pain. . . .
- Yet Another Reason To Look Around Again AFTER You See That Great Play Last week we talked about Carol Knouse's lesson learned. . . .but the week before, Bob Knouse also learned that lesson about taking the second look before making a play. With an empty tile bag, a rack of ELORSSU, and an open "C" sitting in the upper left corner, Bob played CLOSERS from the "C" for 10 pts and hooked the "U" onto an "M" to go out with 4 pts on the next play. Remember, the rule of thumb is "Find a good play. . . .then look for a better one." Had Bob taken that second look and found the common "out" bingo CLOSURES (83 pts) rather than making the 10 pt CLOSERS play, he would have been able to eke out a close come-from-behind victory rather than suffer a 93 pt loss.

- Weekly Anagram Challenge Karen Lundeen provides our challenge this week. With a rack of AEILNST, Karen played the bingo SALIENT, which has SIX anagrams. Can you come up with them? (Answer in "Bingos" section below.)
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the "DG" Contest awarded to the player who turned
in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "D"
and "G" somewhere within it. Ed Saunders provided the only two
entries for this contest, DOTAGES and GANDERS.
GANDERS wins the $5.25 prize with 72 pts.
The second was the Calling All Foodies Contest for the highest scoring play
of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within
it, some type or form of food. Sarah Jacobson showed her caviar tastes with
ROE for 11 pts, Carol Knouse came up with a 24
pt LEMON, but Ed Saunders served up 72 pts worth
of VEGGIES to scarf up the $5.25 prize.
Ed Saunders launched a full frontal assault on the 100+ Point Play Progressive Jackpot this week, racking up three separate 100+ plays, DAKOITY for 119, EYEWASH for 113, and DEVIANT for 108. Ed picked up $1.31 for his efforts.
Ed's $11.81 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.
No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.31 added to it. We have paid out $170.14 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.
The next session (November 23, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• "MB" Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that contains both of the letters "M" and "B"
anywhere within it. (e.g. BOOJUMS, JAMBEAUX, MBAQANGA, ABOMASUM, MILLIBAR,
BROMINE, MARBLING, MAMBOED, LABDANUM, etc.)
•The Name Game Contest - A quarter of dues
collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring
play of a word that is a proper name, or incorporates a proper name somewhere
within it (e.g. PAHLAVI, VENTURI, BONNIEST, MULLIGAN, SEAROBIN, JOHNBOAT,
GRAHAMS, PARTONS, ABIGAILS, BILLBUG, ROENTGEN, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $8.77
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth
of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more
points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $10.63 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $6.72 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
