Session Notes - October 12, 2008 Session

This session marked the tenth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

Carol Knouse won the day today, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record to come in first for her first time and raising her rating a big 74 points to 1334. Way to go!!!!!

The normal array of chips adorned the goodies table today along with newtons, trail mix provided by Karen Lundeen, crackers and cheese, and some more chips and dips left over from last Sunday's party. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 28 games in which we scored
9,841 points for a 351.46 point-per-game average. Of the 21 recorded bingos we played, none
was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the You're Driving Me Buggy! Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates within it, the name of a form of insect. Karen Lundeen played REUNITER for 60 (a NIT is the egg of a parasitic insect) but Ed Saunders used that NIT as bait for his RATFISH, making REUNITERS and scoring 94 pts to take the $3.75 prize.

The second was the "CH, CH, CH, CHia" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "CH". Ed Saunders tried to INCH his way to victory for 23 pts, Carol Knouse tried the phony retcher* for 32, but Bob Knouse was staunch in his conviction that his 65 pt STAUNCH would take away the $3.75 prize.

Ed Saunders dropped the "X" in SEXTAIN on a Triple Letter Score square and extended the word to a Double Word Score square to score 115 point and knock off the 100+ Point Play Progressive Jackpot again. Ed picks up $0.93 for his effort.

Ed's $4.68 in winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. We have paid out $126.28 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (October 19, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
Creatures Of The Deep! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, some form of underwater-dwelling life form. (e.g. RATFISH, OCTOPUS, NAUTILUS, ABALONE, REQUINS, PORPOISE, CRAWDAD, PLANKTON, MERMAID, BOWFINS, TUNICATE, MOJARRAS, CRABCAKES, SARGASSO, FISHGIG, SEAROBIN, etc.)
Just Call Me "AL" Contest! - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "AL", in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. ALANINE, OMENTAL, GALILEE, RORQUALS, LALLING, ALLEGORY, GONADIAL, GONIDIAL, RADIALE, ABYSMAL, ALNICOS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.91 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $5.77 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
