Session Notes - August 10, 2008 Session

This session marked the second week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

Sarah Jacobson brought in some wonderful brownies to join the crackers, cheese, nuts, raisins, and chips adorning the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.

The tournament rules division was joined by 4 players who played 24 games in which we scored 9,160 points for a 381.67 point-per-game average. Of the 29 recorded bingos we played, three were phoneys that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Low Powered Contest awarded to the player who made the highest scoring play of a word that has no letters with a face value higher than one point. Ed Saunders powered out 74 points with his play of ROTATES to grab the $3.00 prize for this contest.

The second was the High Powered Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the letters "K", "J", "Q", "X", and "Z". The power was with Ed Saunders yet again as he polished off another contest with his 91 point play of REWAXES. Ed scored another $3.00 for the play.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. We have paid out $17.80 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (Aug 17, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• An "L" Of A Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "L" (e.g. LORGNON, LUMBAGO, LOBOTOMY, LEVANTER, LADANUM, LANGSHAN, LIPPENS, LYCHNIS, etc.)
• High Loss Contest! - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who records the highest losing score of a game during this session.
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $5.79 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.75 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $12.68 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $9.52 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
