Session Notes - November 9, 2008 Session

This session marked the fourteenth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

We welcomed old friend Michael Rhodes this week. He says he only gets one Sunday off every five years, so we look forward to seeing him again sometime in 2013 unless he can free up another Sunday between now and then. We'll hold the prize money he won today for him until he shows up again. . . . We enjoyed his company and his strong play very much.

The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, some more chips and salsa from Karen Lundeen, with bagels and cream cheese from Sarah Jacobson. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.

The tournament rules division was joined by 6 players who played 34 games in which we scored
12,566 points for a 369.59 point-per-game average. Of the 31 recorded bingos we played, three
were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Well, You Can Call Me "J" Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "J" somewhere within it. Five players turned in entries for this contest. Carol Knouse caught a JET for 26, Ed Saunders turned JIVER into 35, Sarah Jacobson walked with the HAJIS for 39, Bob Knouse found 42 pts worth of JOY, but Michael Rhodes said "THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!" as his JABBER pulled in 51 pts to win the $4.50 prize.

The second was the Instrumental Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, some form of musical instrument. Ed Saunders had the only entry in this contest, playing his GUITAR for 14 pts to reap the $4.50 payoff.

Carol Knouse and Ed Saunders cracked the 100+ Point Play Progressive Jackpot this week, Carol netting 101 pts for her TWS play of EXHUMERS, and Ed opening a game with QUOINED for 104. By virtue of a coin toss, Carol picks up $1.80 and Ed takes home $1.75 for their efforts.

Ed's $6.25 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.12 added to it. We have paid out $158.33 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (November 16, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
"DG" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains both of the letters "D" and "G" anywhere within it. (e.g. DOGGONED, GODETIA, GAMBADO, DIGITIZE, FLEDGING, GODWITS, WIDGEONS, DIRTBAG, GARDYLOO, GIDDYUP, etc.)
Calling All Foodies Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, some type or form of food (e.g. BILTONGS, OXTAILS, PEMBINA, ATEMOYA, KOHLRABI, HAVARTI, MAMALIGA, VELOUTE, SPAETZLE, ZWIEBACK, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $7.46 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $9.32 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $5.41 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
