Session Notes - September 7, 2008 Session

This session marked the sixth week of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2008-2009 season!

Sarah Jacobson and Karen Lundeen added some corn puffs, chips and dip to the normal array of chips adorning the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

Newcomer Chiuul Cielo joined the group and got her feet wet in a friendly recreational game with Richard Spence. We look forward to seeing her at future sessions as she eases herself into the scrabble scene.

We've added a new dimension to the club proceedings with the introduction of Quackle and Internet Scrabble Club play as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle and ISC will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle and ISC will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year. More computer activities may be made available in the near future.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 32 games in which we scored 10,866 points for a 362.20 point-per-game average. Of the 31 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "I, I, I" What A Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that contains two or more "I"s somewhere within it. Ed Saunders wanted to use the prize to add some BOISERIE (66 pts) to the playing room, but Richard Spence thought that was a TRIVIAL (70 pts) pursuit and walked away with the $3.75 prize.

The second was the "CONS" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains one or more of the negative words or prefixes "CON", "ANTI", "NON", or "OUT". Ed Saunders tried to push through his 65 pt OUTLINE for the prize, but Janis Clem countered that with a ROUTINE play for 66 pts to pick up the $9.75 accumulated prize.

Ed Saunders took advantage of an "E" hangin' out in the third spot between two Triple Word Scores and plopped down ATELIERS for 131 pts and the $9.70 residing in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot this week.

Ed's winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. We have paid out $85.10 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (September 14, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
Weatherman Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains to weather in some manner. Iffy words must be explained by writing a sentence connecting your word with weather. (e.g. HABOOBS, TORNADIC, RAINBOWS, TRAINING, FLOODED, SNOWMAN, SUNBURN, etc.)
"N"y Thing Goes Contest! - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "N". (e.g. NYLGHAUS, NOSEBAGS, NUDZHING, NOPALITO, NONIONIC, NEMATODE, NAPHTHOL, NYSTATIN, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
