Session Notes - July 5, 2009 Session

This session marked the forty-sixth week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2008-2009 season!

The goodies table today featured the usual selection of chips, newtons, cheese and crackers along with fresh raspberries brought in by Sarah Jacobson.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 24 games in which we scored 8,956 points for a 373.1667 point-per-game average. Of the 27 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Independence Day Contest awarded to the player who turned in the highest scoring play of a word that pertains in some direct manner to the 4th of July. Sarah Jacobson set the military tone for this contest with a 13 pt play of VETS. Richard Spence expanded on that with a 70 pt play of SOLDIERS to grab the $3.75 prize.

The second was the "BR" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "B" and "R", in any order, somewhere within it. Richard Spence tried puttin' on the dog with a 20 pt play of BARK. Sarah Jacobson tried to lock up the prize in her 20 pt BRIG. Ed Saunders wins the $3.75 prize with his 30 pt play of ORIBI.

Ed Saunders took another run at the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot, playing JIVIEST FOR 121 pts to score the $0.93 in this week's pot.

Ed's $4.68 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. We have paid out $467.49 in prizes so far this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2008-2009 season.

The next session (July 12, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• Bugs 'n Stuff Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of or pertains in some direct manner to an insect or bug of some sort (e.g. FIGEATER, MORPHOS, HELMINTH, SPHINGID, PISMIRE, BRULOTS, LACEWING, OOTHECAE, etc.) If your word is kinda iffy, support your play with a sentence tying it to insects or bugs as best you can.
• "X" Marks The Pot Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "X" somewhere within it (e.g. XANTHAN, AUXETIC, SALPINX, HYRAXES, EXIGENCY, VERNIXES, POLEAXE, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $35.30 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Historic Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $6.35 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $10.64 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
