Session Notes - June 29, 2008 Session
This session marked the forty-second of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!
Crackers, nuts, raisins, chips and dips adorned the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.
We added a new dimension to the club proceedings on June 22nd with the introduction of Quackle as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year.
We welcomed Bill Penrose, of the "Bill and Sandra Penrose" tandem, to the recreational division this week. He got his feet wet with games against Sarah Jacobson, Bob Knouse and Carol Knouse. We enjoyed his company and are looking forward to future visits from him and his wife Sandra.
The tournament rules division was joined by 4 players who played 14 games in which we scored 5,175 points for a 369.6429 point-per-game average. Of the 15 recorded bingos we played, two were phoneys that went unchallenged.
Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:
- High Game - 478 points by Ed Saunders
- Low Win - 330 points by Sarah Jacobson
- High Loss - 384 points by Ed Saunders (Opponent at 440)
- Bingo King - Ed Saunders for averaging 2.0000 bingos per game

- ETAMINE \n. a loosely woven fabric (played by Ed Saunders)

- IRONIST \n. one who uses irony (played by Ed Saunders)
- SAILING \v. this word is interesting primarily because of its anagram - NILGAIS \n/pl. a large antelope (played by Sarah Jacobson)
- SOVIETS \n/pl. a legislative body in a Communist country (played by Ed Saunders)
- "QUITE" A Play. . . . Bob Knouse took full advantage of the fact that "QI" is now a word. trailing Ed Saunders 309 - 267 late in the game, Bob noticed that the Triple Letter Score square at 14J was open with an "I" on the board at 15J. Bob managed to drop his "Q" on the TLS and played QUITE over to the DWS at 14N. 97 POINTS!!!!! later, Ed was looking for a way to minimize his losses. . . .
- Weekly Anagram Challenge Carol Knouse gives us our challenge this week. With a rack of AEIPRSS, Carol played the bingo ASPIRES, which has FOUR valid anagrams. Can you come up with them? This is a toughie. . . .(Answers in "Bingos" section below.)
We featured two regular contests this week.
The first was the Anything BUT "OUT" Contest for the highest
scoring play of a word that contains the letters "O-U-T", in any
order OTHER THAN O-U-T, somewhere within it. No one could work out a winning
entry this week, so we'll toss the $3.00 prize back out there again next
time.
The second was the HI! Let's Have A Contest for the highest scoring play
of a word that contains the letters "H-I", in any order, somewhere
within it. Bob Knouse came up with a winner here, playing WITH
for 20 pts to walk away with the $3.00 prize.
No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $350.14 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.
The next session (July 6, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• Anything BUT "OUT" Contest - $3.00
plus a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns
in the highest scoring play of a word that contains all three of the letters
"O-U-T", in any order OTHER THAN O-U-T,
somewhere within it. Words with OUT, in that order, will be tossed OUT of
the competition. (e.g. CONATUS,
SAUTOIRE, FAITOUR, TINAMOU,
VITREOUS, BUOYANT,
TURBOTS, THOUSAND,
etc.).
• Monsoon Contest - A quarter of dues collected
shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of
a word that pertains to weather in some manner. (e.g. MONSOON, HABOOBS,
TORNADIC, HAILING, WINDIER, SUNSHINE, BALMIEST, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $1.12
plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who
scores a Triple-Triple
play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.87 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $8.01 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores
565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $4.85 plus
a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays
a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
