Session Notes - July 20, 2008 Session

This session marked the forty-fifth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!

Carol and Bob Knouse provided us with some corn chips and salsa this week to go with the crackers, nuts, raisins, and potato chips that adorned the goodies table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

We added a new dimension to the club proceedings on June 22nd with the introduction of Quackle as our new alternative to the dreaded "sit-out". On those occasions when we have an odd number of actual humans to play, Quackle will be available to the odd man out as either a very worthy opponent or as a learning tool. Games against Quackle will not count in the regular club standings, but, if used wisely, may very well have an effect on those standings later in the year.

The tournament rules division was joined by 3 players who played 8 games in which we scored 2,888 points for a 361.0 point-per-game average. Of the 10 recorded bingos we played, none were phoneys that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Birds Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a bird of some kind. Ed Saunders dipped into his knowledge of international birdlife, found the South American bird the ANI, and wrapped a P, a C, and an S around it for PANICS and 46 pts to fly away with the $2.25 payoff.

The second was the CON-test Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C-O-N", in that order, somewhere within it. No entries for this contest were received last week, but Ed Saunders wins the $4.50 prize this time around with his 84 point play of CONNIVES.

Ed's $6.75 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.56 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $369.63 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (July 27, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• Talk To The Animals Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or contains the name of somewhere within it, an animal of some sort. (e.g. DOGgerel, COYPOUS, KEITLOA, CONEPATL, PLATYPUS, DASYURE, DORMICE, KOUPREYS, BEEFALO, AARDWOLF, etc.)
• The "A"s Contest! - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with the letter "A". (e.g. ACACIAS, ABATABLE, ARBELAST, AXOLOTLS, APTERYX, AEQUORIN, ALIMENT, AGMINATE, AASVOGEL, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $2.80 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.56 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $9.69 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $6.53 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
