Session Notes - November 4, 2007 Session

This session marked the thirteenth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!

We'd like to thank Janis Clem (and her husband Roger) for providing the club with major goodies this week. Cucumber sandwiches, brownies, chex mix, gum drops, pineapple and grapes graced the goodies table in the playing room. No one in the club went hungry this week.

Elinor Horner and Isabel Keranen comprised the Recreational Division this week. No bingos were reported from this table but I couldn't help but notice BEJEWELED on their board once as I walked by. Isabel had hooked the front extension "BE" onto Elinor's bingo play of "JEWELED". Both good plays.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 38 games in which we scored 13,427 points for a 353.3421 point-per-game average. Of the 37 recorded bingos we played, two were phonies that went unchallenged.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured one repeat and two regular contests this week.

The Repeat Contest was The Great Debates Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is reflective of American Politics. Judy Carlock submitted the, unfortunately, all too common political standby "I am a PATRIOT and my opponent is not." (79 pts) but, absolutely no great debate about it, Monique Kornell delivered the winning entry with "The rival political party claimed that they were ENACTING the best policies." (3x3, 131 pts) Monique tucks away $6.00 in her campaign war chest.

The first regular contest was the Body Parts Contest Revisited for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a specific anatomical portion of the human body. Monique Kornell lent an EAR (16 pts) to this contest but Ed Saunders scored 24 pts with his play of DOGEAR and wins the $6.00 prize. Due to the expenses involved in setting up the Northwest Club and the expected expenses involved in preparing to launch a series of tournaments beginning in January 2008, Ed Saunders will donate this $6.00 and any other prizes he earns the rest of this season back to the club kitty.

The second was the TransOXonia Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the couplet "OX" somewhere within it. Ed Saunders "salmoned" up the courage to play "LOX" for 26 pts. Karen Lundeen just played "OX" itself for 39 pts and wins the $6.00 payoff.

Monique Kornell had a rack of AEINNT? (Which has twelve 7-letter bingos in it if you want to test yourself - answers follow at end of paragraph) but noticed a "C" in the fourth spot in a 3x3 line. There are eight 8-letter bingos with Monique's rack + a "C", but only one of them has the "C" in the fourth spot. Monique happily laid down ENACTING for 131 points, the club's second triple-triple of the season and the accompanying $6.36 jackpot. Way to go, Monique! (twelve 7-letter bingos in Monique's rack were: ANCIENT, ANTEING, ANTIGEN, ENATION, ENTRAIN, GENTIAN, INANEST, INFANTE, MANNITE, NEATNIK, PINNATE, STANINE; the other seven 8-letter bingos with Monique's rack and a "C" were: ANCIENTS, ANTIACNE, CANNIEST, INCANTED, INSECTAN, INSTANCE, UNCINATE)

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.50 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $117.84 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (November 11, 2007) shall feature the following contests:
Veteran's Day Contest - November 11 is the official date of the Veteran's Day Holiday. In recognition of our Veterans, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is representative of the important role our service members have played in the founding and preservation of America and the American way of life. (e.g. SERVICE, AIRWOMEN, CORPSMAN, BIVOUAC, SECURITY, HOMELAND, OVERSEAS, CAMPAIGN, SOLDIER, BASTIONS, JARHEADS, INFANTRY, CAVALRY, DOGFIGHT, WARTIME, DEPLOYS, DEFENDER, SWABBIES, etc.)
"LL" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the couplet "LL" somewhere within it . (e.g. ALLELUIA, NIELLOS, DROLLING, OVERALLS, BILLETED, MOLLIES, BULLACES, LULLING, ILLOGIC, SAWMILLS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
