Session Notes - June 1, 2008 Session

This session marked the thirty-eighth of NSA Club #565 (Northwest)'s 2007-2008 season!

We welcomed Sandra Masel, an old friend of the club from Melbourne, Australia, to club this week. Sandra visits her daughter here in Tucson once or twice a year and always manages to find a way to visit our club, as well. Her visits are always enjoyable and always welcome.

The goodies table was stocked with cookies that Sandra Masel and the Knouses brought along and the usual assortment of nuts, raisins, and chips already on the table today. Thanks to all who provided snacks for the group.

The tournament rules division was joined by 5 players who played 26 games in which we scored 9,868 points for a 379.5385 point-per-game average. Of the 38 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "GO" For The Gold Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "GO", in that order, somewhere within it. Ed Saunders rang the GONG (12 pts) to start the contest, Carol Knouse played GOY (but neglected to record the score for the play), leaving Bob Knouse and Karen Lundeen to split the $3.75 prize with their 15 point plays of GOOS and GOER respectively. Bob picks up the odd penny by virtue of his higher club attendance record.

The second was The Game Is The Name Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name , either first or second name, of a person. Bob Knouse played BEN for 14, Karen Lundeen tried VAN for 24, Carol Knouse placed JANE on the board for 29, Sandra Masel built a BOWER for 30 points, but Ed Saunders dipped into his knowledge of recent Major League Baseball first basemen (Cecil and Prince) to play FIELDER for 86 points and grabbed the $3.75 prize.

Ed's $3.75 winnings were donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.93 added to it. As of this session we have paid out $327.66 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2007-2008 season.

The next session (June 8, 2008) shall feature the following contests:
• LOcation, LOcation, LOcation! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "LO", in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. LOCATION, LORGNON, NIELLOED, ALOPECIA, ABALONE, LONELIER, CEMBALO, BOMBLOAD, PUMELOS, KEITLOA, BUMMALO, ETIOLOGY, LOIDING, GLOXINIA, etc.).
• The Hydration Is Important Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a beverage of some kind.(e.g. WATERzooi, GINgelli, MADEIRA, MILKwort, LEMONADE, PEPSIne, COKEhead, seaWATER, BEERiest, ALEwife, AKVAVIT, SANGRIAS, BRANDIES, verJUICE, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $0.93 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.49 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $5.39 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.23 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
