Session Notes - July 25, 2010 Session

This session marked the fiftieth and final week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season! Next week (August 1, 2010) will be the first week of the 2010-2011 club season.

The goodies table featured the usual selection of chips, crackers, salsa, and cheese along with some grapes brought in by Sarah Jacobson.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 48 games in which we scored 17,729 points for a 369.33542 point-per-game average. Of the 48 recorded bingos we played, one was a phony that went unchallenged.

Carol Knouse followed last week's ascension to the winner's circle by claiming this week's top honors with a 3-1 record and a +218 pt spread.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was the Monsoon, Nonsoon Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a weather related form, condition, or feature. Sarah Jacobson and Carol Knouse forecast 16 pts worth of wind and clouds with respective plays of WIND and CLOUD but Bob Knouse brightened things up with a 70 pt SUNRISE to start the day with a $5.25 prize.

The second was the Gimme Shelter Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a manmade or natural shelter or domicile. Sarah Jacobson went all animalistic on us this week and scored 18 pts for ARK, Janis Clem found no room for her at the inn with her 32 pt play of wINNow, Richard Spence went straight to the source with 48 pts for WOMBat, Carol Knouse was looking for a safe place to hide her winnings when she scored 67 pts with PLACErs, but Ed Saunders said "hold the fort" and racked up 80 pts with FORTies to claim the $5.25 prize.

Janis Clem was scouting locations for a bingo with her rack of CLNOO?? (nineteen 7s, fifty-eight 8s possible with that rack) and finally settled on the 9-letter LOCATIONS through a hanging "AT" combo for 60 pts and the $2.62 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot. The Computer Game also played a 9 this week, scoring 74 with UNDERCOAT, but graciously ceded its share of the prize to Janis.

None of the other Progressive Jackpots were claimed this week and $1.31 shall be added to each next session. We have paid out $586.18 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

This week's contests are from the mind of Ed Saunders. Thanks, Ed!!!
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (August 1, 2010) shall feature the following contests:

I Hate "L"s Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word that begins or ends with the letter "L" (e.g. LORGNON, FORESTAL, LIMEKILN, STOICAL, LINALOOL, LIRIOPES, PICKEREL, MILFOIL, STRONGYL, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $3.93 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
