Session Notes - January 29, 2012 Session

This session marked the twenty-third week of NASPA Club #800 (Northwest Scrabble Club)'s 2011-2012 season!

We opened up the second playing room for play this week to provide a little more relaxed playing atmosphere for those who prefer to socialize a bit more while they play. Early indications are that it was a huge success (for both groups) and we'll likely keep that as a regular feature of the Northwest club.

The tournament rules divisions were joined by 9 players who played 66 games in which we scored 24,803 points for a 375.8030 point-per-game average. Of the 79 recorded bingos we played, 2 were phoneys that went unchallenged.

Janis Clem claimed top honors in the A Division with a 4-0 + 278 record for the day.

Norma Paxson again claimed top honors for the B Division.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This week's regular contests were from the club archives.
If you have contest ideas or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

There were 6 players in division A and 3 players in division B.

The first was the Starts Or Ends In "C" Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that starts or ends in "C". In Division A, Ed Saunders rode into the fray on his CAYUSE (an Indian pony) for 29 pts, Naurlene Canterman trapped 29 pts in her COIL, Janis Clem ruled over 38 pts with CZAR, Richard Spence collected 66 liquid pts with his CISTERNA, and Lewis Saul shined with his 87 pt entry of CHROMIC to grab the $4.50 prize. In Division B, Norma Paxson tried to lift the $2.25 payoff with her 7 pt CRANE but it didn't carry as much weight as Sarah Jacobson's 47 pt play of CARRY and Sarah ended up carrying off the money.

The second was the And The Winner Takes A Bowwow Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of a breed or type of dog. In division "A", Janis Clem lobbied for the term "RAT" to apply to a "rat" terrier. Since acceptance of the term changed the winning entry but didn't change the ultimate winner, it was allowed without calling in an independent judge. Richard Spence racked up 67 pts for AMIRATE, Janis Clem managed 74 with RATTIEST, but Ed Saunders wins the $4.50 payoff with 75 pts for KERATIN. Ed would have won anyway with 22 pts for BIRD (as in bird dog) had RAT not been accepted. Division B saw Sarah Jacobson pick up the $2.25 prize by going with the basics. Sarah scored 7 pts with DOG.

The Progressive Jackpots all went unclaimed this week and $1.68 will be added to each next session. We have paid out $278.46 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2011-2012 season.

Next session's contests are from the club archives.
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next regular session (February 5, 2011) shall feature the following contests:
