Session Notes - October 13, 2011 Session

This session marked the tenth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2011-2012 season!

We welcomed the return of Monique Kornell to club this week following a couple of weeks off to handle a medical issue. We were glad to have her back in the fold.

We also welcomed longtime friend Yvonne Knickerbocker to the club this week. Yvonne still has Tucson ties and shows up at the club now and then when she's in town. She's always fun and always welcome at the Tucson clubs.

The tournament rules divisions were joined by 13 players who played 70 games in which we scored 25,812 points for a 368.7429 point-per-game average. Of the 93 recorded bingos we played, 10 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Richard Spence took top honors in Division "A" this week with a 5-0 + 510 pt performance, 14 bingos and a 444.20 ppg avg.

Sarah Jacobson claimed the top spot in Division "B" with a 4-3 record.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix. This week's contests were from the cluttered mind of Ed Saunders.

Division "A" had 9 players this week. Division "B" had 4 players.

The first was the Doc, I Think I Need An "IV" Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that contains the letters "I" and "V", in any order, somewhere within it.
The top three entries in Division "A" were Namoli Brennet's lividest* for 67, Naurlene Canterman's OUTVIES for 70 and Travis Carlson's 73 pt OVERLIT to win the $6.75 prize.
Division "B" saw Roger Wiens and Steven Brown score 9 and 22 respectively with IVY and Sarah Jacobson grab the $3.00 payoff with 30 pts for VIEW.

The second was the Weaving Thgough Traffic Contest for the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of something commonly encountered in daily traffic. The judge called this one pretty tight.
Division "A" saw Sherry Hoffman-Blum STEERING for 60, Ed Saunders' leVANter for 65, and Richard Spence waiting for deTRAINS to score 86 and the $6.75 prize.
Division "B" went to Roger Wiens 68 pt TUNNELS to win the $3.00 prize.

Travis Carlson and Monique Kornell shared the $2.43 payoff from the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot this week. Travis' 104 pt MELANIZE earned him the $1.22 lion's share while Monique's creative brayings* scored 102 pts and the remaining $1.21.

The other Progressive Jackpots went unclaimed this week and $2.43 will be added to each next session. We have paid out $223.69 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2011-2012 season.

Next session's contests are from the unusual mind of Ed Saunders.
If you have a contest idea or perhaps a favorite contest from the past, let me know, we'll try to work it into the mix.

The next session (October 20, 2011) shall feature the following contests:
Do, Re, Mi For "FA" Contest - A quarter of dues collected in each division shall be awarded to the player in that division who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that contains the letter couplet "FA", in that order, somewhere within it. (e.g. KHALIFA, FALCONRY, TAFFAREL, SIFAKAS, ZAFFARS, UNIFACE, TIFFANY, DEWFALL, EPIFAUNA, FALBALA, CALCTUFA, etc.).
How'd You Describe Him/Her, Again? Contest - A quarter of dues collected in each division shall be awarded to the player in that division who turns in the highest scoring play of a main word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, a word describing a stereotype of a person or a person's occupation (e.g. FACTOTUM, ESTHETE, GRISETTE, MULETEER, LICKSPIT, CYPRIAN, SODALIST, TOVARICH, DRUNKen, PALADIN, MONKeys, AUNTlier, hautBOY, jamBEAU, BAYADERE, CELIACS, EUPHUIST, CALOYER, AIRHEAD, etc.)

Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.43 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
