Session Notes - April 29, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirty-fifth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 64 games in which we scored 22,814 points for a 356.4688 point-per-game average. Of the 58 recorded bingos we played, 5 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Monique Kornell took top honors this week, going 5-1 with a +394 spread

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The Regular Contests for this week's (April 29th) session were submitted by Travis Carlson. Thanks Travis !!!
If you have a contest idea or a favorite contest from the past, let me know and we'll try to work it into the mix.

The first was the Foul Vowel Contest for the highest scoring play of a "vowel dump" word that consists of more than 70% vowels and at least 3 letters total. Lewis Saul hopped in his AUTO for 14 pts, Naurlene Canterman played a coupon worth one EURO for 16 pts, but Travis Carlson floated out ASEA for 27 pts and the $6.00 prize.

The second was the Sticks And Stones Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of something physically or emotionally hurtful. Mickey Matz speculated that JAIL (24) might be hurtful; Naurlene Canterman figured that to BEAT (26) something would be hurtful; gardener Sarah Jacobson decided that when a plant WILTS (36) it is hurtful; Ed Saunders believes that to be shot with an arrow tipped with OORALIS (an arrow poison - 69 pts) would be hurtful; Roger Wiens, perhaps channeling a past theatrical failure, thinks that being sPANNED (73) would be hurtful; Monique Kornell might consider a marital SPATzel* (75) to be hurtful; but Travis Carlson looked upon all those entries with DISDAIN (82) and continued with his hurtful FLEECING (86) of this contest's entrants to claim yet another $6.00 prize.

Mickey Matz claimed the money ($5.43) in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot this week. With a rack of DEIRRST (2 sevens in that rack) and an "F" hanging in the 4th position between two TWS squares, Mickey plopped down DRIFTERS for 149 pts and the money. A better play all around than either of the seven letter bingos on his rack.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.50 shall be added to each. We have paid out $623.37 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (May 6, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Golden Spike Contest - On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit in the Utah Territory, Officials and workers of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways met to drive in the "Golden Spike", symbolizing completion of the first transcontinental railroad which joined the nation from coast to coast. In honor of this event, a quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the highest scoring play of a word pertaining to connections or joinings of any sort (e.g. GLUIEST, VELCROS, QUOINED, SHIMMED, TREENAIL, COUPLING, SEWINGS, JOINERY, etc.) . If your word is "IFFY", you will need to write a sentence connecting your word to connections or joinings in some manner. Make the connection and you might connect with some money this week.
"O, U" Contest -A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that has either of the letter couplets "OU" or "UO" somewhere within it (e.g. , OUTDONE, BUOYING, SEAMOUNT, QUOITED, DUODENA, LANGUOR, HOUSEBOY, etc.).
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $5.43 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $1.50 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $6.93 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
