Session Notes - January 28, 2010 Session

This session marked the twenty-second week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

We welcomed Alyson Krominga to the tournament divison following her one week shot at the recreational division last week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 10 players who played 70 games in which we scored 24,182 points for a 345.4571 point-per-game average. Of the 51 recorded bingos we played, three were phonies that went unchallenged.

Travis Carlson took top honors this week, going 5-1 with a positive 575 pt spread. Travis also averaged 414 pts per game, and played 2 separate 100+ Plays, one triple-triple and a 571 pt game along the way.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the And The Winner Takes A Bowwow Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a breed or type of dog. Karen Lundeen laughingly played HYENA for 27 pts, but Travis Carlson quietly played BASENJI (A barkless dog) for 110 pts and claimed the $7.50 prize.

The second was the Go Fly A Kittiwake Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, any bird. Roger Wiens had no regrets about his 8 pt play of EGRET, Alyson Krominga and Sarah Jacobson both came up with a 14 pt AUK, and Naurlene Canterman and Ed Saunders both took the South American route to find ANI (A South American bird), Naurlene found her ANI in pANIers for 70 and Ed found his in cyANIde for 78 to win the $7.50 prize.

The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot didn't stand a chance this week as it was assaulted from four different angles. Travis Carlson hit it twice with REWAKING for 115 and BASENJI for 110. Sarah Jacobson scored 112 with FORMATS and Naurlene Canterman made 105 with her non bingo QADIS. Unfortunately for all these folks, the 100+ Jackpot was hit just last week and there was only $1.87 to be had. Split four ways, that's $0.47 per share. Travis makes $0.94 since he claimed two of the four shares.

Travis Carlson didn't stop at the 100+ Play Jackpot though, as he spotted a hanging "IN" in the 3x3 line and strung the phony ringiest* around it for a 99 pt triple-triple and the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot as well. This one pays off to the tune of $15.52.

On top of that, Travis also strung together a 571 point game to claim yet another $13.84 from the Club 565 Progressive Jackpot, bringing his total winnings for the night up to $37.80, a pretty fair return on his $3.00 dues.

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpot this week and $1.87 shall be added to it. We have paid out $381.22 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (February 4, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Well, You Can Call Me JAY! Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "J" somewhere within it (e.g. JACINTHE, BOOJUMS, MOJARRA, SVARAJES, JICAMAS, JANIZARY, ZABAJONE, JUMBUCKS, HADJEES, etc.)
The Fabrics Of Our Lives Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of some sort of fiber or fabric (e.g. ETAMINES, TWEEDier, GALATEA, GROGRAM, CORDUROY, FRIEZES, QUINTINS, OSNABURG, LANITAL, MELTONS, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $1.87 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
