Session Notes - March 25, 2010 Session

This session marked the thirtieth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 10 players who played 80 games in which we scored 29,053 points for a 363.1625 point-per-game average. Of the 83 recorded bingos we played, 3 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors again this week, going 6-0 with a positive 636 pt spread, 15 bingos and a 449 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "V" Is For Victory Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that begins, or ends, with the letter "V". Sarah Jacobson played her 21 pt VIOL, Ed Saunders' 32 pt VIRGA never quite hit the ground, Lewis Saul tried to put his VAST (33) knowledge of "V" words into play, Naurlene Canterman showed us her 39 pt VARIX, but Roger Wiens vexed us all with his 42 pt play of VEX to snare the $7.50 prize.

The second was the Double-Double Your Pleasure Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is a Double-Double (covers two double word score squares in one play). Loren Mitchel danced his way into the competition with POLKAED for 56 pts, Ed Saunders thought he would try GUARDING the prize for 78 pts, but Naurlene Canterman wrote her own scenario with a 90 pt play of INDITED to grab the $7.50 prize.

Lewis Saul and Loren Mitchel split the $9.73 in the Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot this week. Lewis shined up a $4.87 share of the prize with RADIANTS for 140 pts through the first "A". Loren cleaned up the remaining $4.86 with his 113 pt play of ABLUTION through the "L".

The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot fell yet again this week. Naurlene Canterman noticed that this contest's prize was being split pretty much on a weekly basis lately, so she just went ahead and hit it twice with REWAXES for 106 and JEEZ for 103 (103 ?? . . . . Jeez, that was a nice four-letter play!!!!) to claim the collective $1.87 in the pot.

Naurlene also claimed the $1.87 in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot though she didn't want to appear at all EGOTISTIC (70 pts through the "GO") about the play.

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpot this week and $1.87 shall be added to it. We have paid out $539.78 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (April 1, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Happy, Happy Birthday!!!! Contest - Richard Spence turned 16 on March 31st. A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with either of the letters "R" or "S" (e.g. RHOMBOID, SADDHUS, RUGOSELY, SILLABUB, RINGGIT, SHTETEL, RAMTILLA, SYNGAMY, etc.)
Happy, Happy Belated Birthday!! Contest - Travis Carlson turned 23 last week sometime (and I need a contest) so. . . . A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins with either of the letters "T" or "C" (e.g. TUGHRIKS, CELADON, TALUKAS, COCINERA, TAMARIND, CHAPATTI, TELERAN, CHARQUI, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $14.23 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
