Session Notes - January 21, 2010 Session

This session marked the twenty-first week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed three new players to the club this week. Joshua Standig is a visiting NASPA player from Oregon, in town on business and signed up for the Teeny Tiny on Saturday. He played well at both venues and we enjoyed his company and his strong play. Josh is welcome anytime he's in Tucson.

We also welcomed, and greatly enjoyed the company of, two local players to club for the first time. Namoli Brennet jumped right into the tournament division, won a couple of games (including one from the director) and established a 1350 initial club rating based on her play. Aly Krominga decided to "test the waters" before diving into tournament division play and stuck her toe into the recreational pool first (though there's not a lot of difference between the two here). She played well against some strong competition and is poised to join the tournament division next week. We're glad to add them to the mix.

The tournament rules division was joined by 12 players who played 62 games in which we scored 21,848 points for a 352.3871 point-per-game average. Of the 54 recorded bingos we played, NINE were phonies that went unchallenged (the imaginations were running rampant tonight).

Ed Saunders took top honors this week, going 3-1 with a positive 197 pt spread.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the "UN" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "UN", in that order, somewhere within it. Mary Lou Van Liere managed 20 pts with the basic play of UN; the creative trio of Karen Lundeen (unparks for an unknown amount), Loren Mitchel (unrealer* for 59), and Joshua Standig (unerase* for 71) were unable to score enough as Namoli Brennet hooks an "S" on PLUNK and plunks down PLUNKS/STAGIER for 80 pts and the $7.50 prize.

The second was the "ABLE" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "A", "B", "L" and "E", in any order, somewhere within it. Richard Van Liere tried to make some noise in this contest but was barely AUDIBLE at 16 pts. Karen Lundeen BAILED 21 pts out of her boat and was able to make it to solid ground with the $7.50 prize.

Ed Saunders and Loren Mitchel wrung a total of $3.18 ($1.59 each) out of the 100+Play progressive Jackpot. Ed racking up 102 pts with REALIZER and Loren banking 104 pts with pretaxes*.

Loren Mitchel and Travis Carlson split the $4.86 ($2.43 each) in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot. Travis found an open "IN" to play REPLATING through - while Loren, who was extremely creative tonight, came off an "S" to play solatives* through the distant "E".

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.87 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $334.99 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (January 28, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
And The Winner Takes A Bowwow Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, a breed or type of dog. (e.g. LAPDOGS, BASENJI, SAMOYED, HYAENAS, AARDWOLF, JACKALS, BLUETICK, REDBONE, MONGREL, salCHOW, PUPation, SHEPHERD, TERRIER, etc.).
Go Fly A Kittiwake Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of within it, any bird. (e.g. DRONGOS, WHIMBREL, AASVOGEL, TOMTITS, ORTOLANS, SISKINS, DUNLINS, VERDINS, seaROBIN, WRENched, CATBIRD, MACAWber, APTERYX, CAZIQUE, unROBINg, CHUKARS, GOSHAWK, LANNERET, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $13.65 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $11.97 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
