Session Notes - August 20, 2009 Session

This session marked the third week of NASPA Club #565's 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed two players to club this week. First-time club player Ty Henry found us on the web and made his first foray into club play this session. Longtime Tucson Scrabble fixture Naurlene Canterman joined us after a two and a half year hiatus from our club. We greatly enjoyed their company and competition and hope both of them become regular fixtures in future sessions.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 5 tournament division players who played 24 games in which we scored 8,223 points for a 342.6250 points per game average. Of the 22 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders was the big winner this week, going 3-1 with a positive 379 pt spread. Monique Kornell was also 3-1 and recorded a 563 pt individual game.

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the "MB" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "M" and "B", in any order, somewhere within it. Vernon Berry extended the word CRUMBLE to a triple-word-score by adding an "RS" to make CRUMBLERS and garner 42 pts, but Ed Saunders had his prayers answered with his 84 pt BEDESMEN to put the $3.00 prize in his personal collection box.

The second regular contest was Sump'n For The Tummy Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or incorporates somewhere within it, the name of something that is consumed as a food. Ty Henry's first play at club was AIOLI (a garlic mayonnaise) for 11 pts but Monique Kornell ordered up some ZAS (pizzas) for 56 pts and paid the bill with her $3.00 winnings from this contest.

Ed Saunders kept the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot empty with the aforementioned 9 letter bingo APERITIFS. Ed adds $0.75 to his nightly haul with his 64 pt niner.

Ed's $3.75 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $0.75 added to it. We have paid out a total of $47.96 in prizes during the 2009-2010 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (August 27, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• "W" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "W" somewhere within it (e.g. WADMAALS, ADVOWSON, WAMEFOU, CROWFOOT, WAESUCKS, CATAWBA, WATERZOOI, BOWLDERS, etc.)
• This One's For The Birds Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is the name of, or incorporates the name of somewhere within it, a bird of some kind (e.g. CURLEWS, DUNLINS, HOACTZIN, APTERYX, CAZIQUE, CORVINE, STARLING, REDPOLL, TITMOUSE, ORTOLANS, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $5.80 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $0.75 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $2.62 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
