Session Notes - November 19, 2009 Session

THE SPEEDWAY SCRABBLE CLUB WILL NOT MEET ON THANKSGIVING DAY, NOVEMBER 26TH!!!

CLUB WILL RESUME ITS REGULAR SCHEDULE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3RD!!!

This session marked the fifteenth week of NASPA Club #565's 2009-2010 season!

We welcomed William Barfuss to the club this week. William is a product of the Albuquerque club who is currently roaming around the country figuring out what it is he wants to do. This week he's in Tucson and we're happy to have him at the Tucson clubs.

In the Tournament session, we were joined by 8 tournament division players who played 42 games in which we scored 15,216 points for a 362.2857 points per game average. Of the 41 recorded bingos we played, three were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors for the week, going 5-0 with a positive 402 pt spread.

We featured two regular contests this week

The first regular contest was the "NL" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter couplet "NL", in any order, somewhere within it. Sarah Jacobson scored 20 for LIN, Ed Saunders got 70 for LOATHING, Naurlene Canterman put together 73 with her DOWELING, Mickey Matz tried the SINGLES scene for 74, but Jason Sommer was AMENABLE (86 pts) to winning this contest and its $6.00 prize.

The second regular contest was the This One's For The Birds Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a bird or type of bird. Sarah Jacobson dove in with her AUK for 17 pts, Ed Saunders took a run at it with his EMU for 21 pts, but Mickey Matz and his 41 pt WRENS flew off with this $6.00 prize.

Ed Saunders was the latest player to take down the 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot, scoring 100 even for RIFFLES to cop the $1.50 prize.

Ed's $1.50 winnings will be donated back to the club kitty.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and each shall have $1.50 added to it. We have paid out a total of $235.79 in prizes during the 2009-2010 season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (December 3, 2009) shall feature the following contests:
• "IOU" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "I", "O", AND "U", in any order, somewhere within it. (e.g. INCONNU, OPAQUING, VITREOUS, SOUVENIR, OSMIUMS, TITMOUSE, ZOARIUM, NIVEOUS, TURQUOIS, etc.)
• True Colors Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a color. (e.g. WHEATEAR, BLUEGILL, SHAGREEN, PREPUCE, MARIGOLD, BROWNIER, BLACKOUT, REDOUBTS, MAGENTA, CERULEAN, TURKOIS, etc.)
•Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $4.68 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
•100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
•Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $3.00 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
•9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $9.16 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
