Session Notes - March 18, 2010 Session

This session marked the twenty-ninth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

We Welcomed Janis Clem, one of the mainstays of the Northwest Scrabble Club in Oro Valley, to the Speedway Club for the first time. She fit right into the mix here and we hope to see her smiling face on future Thursday nights as well.

No games were played in the recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 12 players who played 80 games in which we scored 28,953 points for a 361.9125 point-per-game average. Of the 87 recorded bingos we played, 6 were phonies that went unchallenged.

Ed Saunders took top honors this week, going 5-0 with a positive 509 pt spread, 12 bingos and a 441 pt per game average.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

This weeks contest ideas were submitted by Travis Carlson. (Thanks, Travis!) If you have contest ideas or favorite contests from prior sessions, let me know and we'll see if we can get them into the mix for you.

The first was the Captain Hook Contest for the highest scoring play that contains at least THREE hooks (creates at least three new words in addition to the main word). Janis Clem ordered up a grapa*/AB/PE/AG for 23 pts, Roger Wiens also scored 23 pts with WANE/ZA/AN/RE, Loren Mitchel peeked through his transom and came up with 70 pts for TRANSOM/ET/AT/TA, Richard Spence made 77 with LEGATED/AGA/IT/NE, Travis Carlson held his breath after scoring 85 with AIRLESS/WE/OHS/MUS but Ed Saunders got this contest over fast with a 97 pt play of OVERFAST/DEF/LA/US to claim the $9.00 prize.

The second was the A Contest. . . .And All That Jazz for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a musical instrument, genre, or performer. Sarah Jacobson sang a 4 pt ARIA, Travis Carlson added a 9 pt HORN, Monique Kornell pitched in with a 19 pt ALTO, Ed Saunders managed 26 pts for playing his OBOE, Richard Spence made a smart play when he snapped his fingers together and scored 44 for ZILLS/SMART, Loren Mitchel cast his fate to the winds with misWINDS* for 82, but Naurlene Canterman followed the Jazz motif of this contest and scattered the opposition with SCATter for 83 pts and the $9.00 prize.

The 100+ Play Progressive Jackpot fell yet again this week. Ed Saunders and Loren Mitchel split the $2.25 pot, Ed scoring 103 and $1.13 with GRAYISH while Loren scored 102 and the remaining $1.12 with OVERCOAT.

The $2.25 in the 9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot was also split this week with Travis Carlson claiming $1.13 for his 83 pt play of RESAILING from the "RE" and Richard Spence racking up 60 pts and the remaining $1.12 with RETINULAS through the "ET".

No one cashed in on either of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $2.25 shall be added to each. We have paid out $511.31 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (March 25, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
"V" Is For Victory Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that begins, or ends, with the letter "V" (e.g. VISCOUS, ISOGRIV, VILIPEND, MAZELTOV, VIRGULE, TOLARJEV, VALKYRIE, STOTINOV, VITILIGO, etc.)
Double-Double Your Pleasure Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is a double-double (covers two double word score squares in one play)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $7.86 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $12.36 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
