Session Notes - December 17, 2009 Session

This session marked the eighteenth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

There were no games played in our recreational division this week.

The tournament rules division was joined by 8 players who played 46 games in which we scored 16,559 points for a 359.9782 point-per-game average. Of the 48 recorded bingos we played, one was a phoney that went unchallenged.

Naurlene Canterman took top honors this week, going 5-1 with a positive 465 pt spread.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Catch a "CAB" Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letters "C", "A", and "B ", in any order, somewhere within it. Travis Carlson played PEC/CAB for 29 pts but Ed Saunders proved that he was CAPABLE of winning this contest and the $6.00 prize with his 38 pt play of a word other than "CAB".

The second was the Holiday Season Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of something directly connected to one of the holidays being celebrated between now and January 2nd, 2010. With eight entries (some of which were just a little bit questionable in regards to the directness of their connection), I farmed this out to an impartial judge who determined that only NOG and MALL (so, okay. . . .it was a FEMALE impartial judge, all right?) had a direct connection to this season's holidays. Both of those entries scored 18 pts and both were submitted by contest winner Roger Wiens who can now afford (maybe. . . .) to get himself a cup of NOG at the MALL with his $6.00 winnings.

Ed Saunders sat there with a rack of AEIPST? and nowhere on the board to play any of the 29 (twenty-nine) different 7s available in that rack. . . .Aaah, but there was a hanging "ET" available with just enough room around it for Ed to play APPETITES for a 62 pt "out" bingo and the $3.18 in the 9+Bingo Progressive Jackpot.

No one cashed in on any of the other Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.50 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $282.16 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (January 7, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
Teeny Tiny Tournaments Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the letter "T" the greatest number of times, anywhere within it. (e.g. TATTIEST, STRETTI, TITTUPS, GUTTATE, RATATAT, ETATIST, VITTATE, TITBITS, TOFUTTI, , etc.) If your word has more "T"s in it than another player's higher scoring word, then your word trumps his.
Baby New Year Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a baby or young animal of some kind (e.g. TODDLER, LAMBKIN, LEVERET, KITTENS, PUPPIES, NESTLING, POLLYWOG, NEONATE, GOSLING, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $8.79 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $4.11 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $7.11 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - A sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
* = Jackpot prizes cannot be combined.
