Session Notes - January 14, 2010 Session

This session marked the twentieth week of NASPA Club #565 (Speedway Scrabble Club)'s 2009-2010 season!

One game was played in the recreational division this week. a young lady named Carol dropped in "just for a little while" to see how the club worked. We talked to her about Scrabble options in Tucson, gave her a couple of Mike Baron's "Cheat Sheets", a copy of Ed Saunders' "A Word About The Words We Use", and a chance to play a rec game against tournament division player Travis Carlson. We expect that she'll visit one of Tucson's more recreationally oriented clubs next. We wish her well.

The tournament rules division was joined by 7 players who played 42 games in which we scored 14,734 points for a 350.8095 point-per-game average. Of the 39 recorded bingos we played, three were phonies that went unchallenged.

Monique Kornell took top honors this week, going 3-1 with a positive 520 pt spread, a 452.00 pt per game average and a 553 pt game.

Some numbers and whatnot for the tournament session include:

Some interesting bingos:

We featured two regular contests this week.

The first was the Double "AA" Contest for the highest scoring play which includes the two-letter word "AA" as a part of it. Naurlene Canterman went straight at it, playing AA for 12 pts; Monique Kornell added in a little water and a bird, playing EAU to form KAE and AA for 15pts; Ed Saunders, though, thought he'd have a little pizza with his AA, hooking an open A with his ZA to form AA and score 33 pts and the $5.25 prize.

The second was the Who's In Charge Here? Contest for the highest scoring play of a word that is, or contains somewhere within it, the name of a person, figure, or position of authority. Mickey Matz scored 30 pts with his play of SHEIK, Naurlene Canterman netted 33 for her SQUIRE play, Loren Mitchel put his fate in the hands of a FED (FED/FORAM for 51), but Ed Saunders used the power of his OFFICES (81) and stashed the $5.25 prize in his petty cash drawer.

No one cashed in on any of the Progressive Jackpots this week and $1.31 shall be added to each of them. We have paid out $311.95 in prizes this season. Click here for a complete list of prizes awarded during the 2009-2010 season.

The next session (January 21, 2010) shall feature the following contests:
The "UN" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word that contains the couplet "UN" in that order somewhere within it (e.g. UNGUENT, MUNTJAKS, YOUNKER, SEAMOUNT, NUNATAKS, AVIFAUNA, VODOUNS, UNCIFORM, PICAYUNE, etc.).
The "ABLE" Contest - A quarter of dues collected shall be awarded to the player who turns in the highest scoring play of a word containing the letters "A", "B", "L", and "E" in any order somewhere within it. (e.g. BLOVIATE, ARBELAST, LABIATED, EDUCABLE, ABLEGATE, BEADLES, LAMBASTE, BARNACLE, ALBUMEN, EMBLAZON, GAMBOLED, etc.)
Triple-Triple Progressive Jackpot* - $11.78 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores a Triple-Triple play.
100+ Play Progressive Jackpot* - $1.31 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 100 or more points in a single play
Club 565 Progressive Jackpot - $10.10 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who scores 565 or more points in a single game.
9+ Bingo Progressive Jackpot* - $2.99 plus a sixteenth of the session's dues will be awarded to any player who plays a bingo of 9 or more letters in length.
